Westin has been using a cgm for a year and his a1c has gone from 8 to 6.5. We have had one denial and we met the requirement for a prescription (which we always had) and now we are waiting for the next reason for denial.US State:Name of Denied Insurance Company:Flag

Name: Jesse Nagel on Jul 14, 2008Comments: I have GHI of New York.. While they didnt actually deny me the Navigator CGMS.. they sure didnt make the whole process very easy. They kept saying its investigational- and it isnt.. It's FDA approved !! I've been using the CGMS for almost 2 weeks- and have avoided many low blood sugars. My mom doesnt have to get up all night to check me- she can just hear the alarm sound that says that I'll go low in 30 minutes ... then i just eat a few tabs, or drink juice and I dont actually ever go low.. The cgms is a lifesaver... for both of us.US State:Name of Denied Insurance Company:Flag

Name: Heidi Eikenhorst on Jul 14, 2008Comments: I have yet to receive a denial by our insurance for a CGMS for my daughter. However, I know many, many people who have been denied, it is the rule, not the exception. Many of us have children who are difficult to manage and control and they need the CGMS to prevent nocturnal hypoglycemia and improve post-prandial spikes. I am signing this petition in support of my own (possible future) plight to receive coverage for the CGMS and for the plights of all of those patients with diabetes who need this important device to stay safe and alive. I hope and pray that insurance companies will wake up to the true costs of diabetes, which skyrocket with complications down the road if they don't allow patients to help themselves with technological advances.US State:Name of Denied Insurance Company:Flag

Name: Yvonne Teets on Jul 14, 2008Comments: My 10 year old son would greatly benefit from a CGM to monitor his blood sugars. Most of the time he doesn't feel the lows. I think monitoring continuously will greatly reduce complications down the road. It seems to be cheaper to monitor and prevent instead of the insurance waiting until there are complications and expensive hospital stays.US State:Name of Denied Insurance Company:Flag

Name: Justine O'Neill on Jul 15, 2008Comments: CGMs can prove to be an extremely useful and advantageous tool in the management of diabetes and prevention of more detrimental (and expensive) health complications later in life. They can significantly improve the quality of life for individuals with diabetes, especially those with Type 1, and it is unfair to deny coverage of this instrument to those who seek to use it for these reasons.US State:Name of Denied Insurance Company:Flag

Name: Emily Whiting on Jul 15, 2008Comments: I live in Oklahoma and have military insurance. I had a dexcom for 3 months with no problem but then my insurace company sent me a letter stating they will not longer cover the system and I needed to send it back to the company. I went a year and a half with 6 trips to the hospital due to extreme blood sugars that I did not relize until it was too late. After 4 months of being in Oklahoma I passed out at a gas pump in a town of 300. It took 15 mintues for state troopers to arrive and then another 45 mintues for a ambulance. Luckly one of the troopers was a diabetic and saw my insulin pump; he checked my blood sugar and it was 21 mg/dL when the ambulance arrived my blood sugar was only up to 35 mg/dL. They gave me D50 and transferred me to the hospital. I spent 1 night and was sent home. 2 weeks after this incedent we knew we had to fight to get my CGMS back. Luckly my doctor, CDE, and parents were up for the fight. I did get it back but everytime it is time to order my supplies I get "kicked off of Tricare" This last for a week and then they fix it. This causes not only stress which causes my blood sugars to get out of control but arguments and depression for my parents.US State:Name of Denied Insurance Company:Flag

I do fungersticks to check my blood sugars 8+ times a day (that's over a thousand dollars worth of glucose meter strips) and can't get half the information (patterns in the rise and fall of blood sugars, how stress, exercise and/or illness effect my blood sugar) that I could if I had the CGMS!US State:Name of Denied Insurance Company:Flag

Name: Adam Jensen on Jul 15, 2008Comments: I am currently waiting for the completion of the approval process (currently waiting on forms from doctor). My insurance company is BC/BS of TN. I was extremely disappointed to learn that a draft policy was under consideration that may move CGMS to the category of "investigational". I have yet to hear the final decision on this draft policy. I am applying for CGMS coverage because my brief experience with CGMS (in a trial) proved to me the power of this technology. While using the CGMS, my blood sugar levels were under exceptionally tight control. I have no doubt that CGMS will be the standard of care in the near future, and that the use of CGMS will prevent countless complications and extend the lives of diabetics. If insurance companies truly care about their policy holders, and if they want to reduce future costs by improving the health of their policy holders, they will start approving CGMS with greater consistency.US State:Name of Denied Insurance Company:Flag

Trends that could help me make decisions about my insulin doses and carb intake. Trends that could help catch a low or high before they happen. Name: Tanya Corona on Jul 15, 2008Comments: I am not diabetic, but I am a reactive hypoglycemic and know full well how one feels when the sugars go down. I think not only would it serve in the best interest of the patient to have coverage for CGMS, but also be in the best interest of the insurance companies as this means patients would now be more in control of their health, thus making less trips to doctor's offices and hospitals. As you can see, in the end, it would be mean less insurance payments handed out by insurance companies and more happier and healthier patients. It's a win-win situation that is so obvious.US State:Name of Denied Insurance Company:Flag
