Name: Jeanne Stoppard on Jan 14, 2013Comments: My granddaughter lost lung function as she was not diagnosed until she was 11 months old. The doctor in Campbell River my granddaughter saw did not have the experience to check for Cystic Fibrosis despite my daughter's constant visits to his office and my granddaughters classic symptoms. He diagnosed asthma and did not check for cystic fibrosis even when my daughter asked if it could be cystic fibrosis (due to salty skin) My daughter finally gave up and asked to be referred to a pediatrician in Campbell River who could not see her for a year. She took her daughter to a pediatrician in Courtenay who sent them to Nanaimo for the sweat test and she was diagnosed that afternoon. With newborn screening my granddaughter would have had the care she needed right from the beginning for a better outcome.Flag

Name: Patricia on Jan 14, 2013Comments: My son was diagnosed with CF at 3 months, but not until after a very close call. Newborn screening was not available at that time, and would have saved him a great deal of suffering and very near death. CF screening must be a mandatory practice for all Canadian newborns.Flag

Name: John Hanrahan on Jan 14, 2013Comments: Newborn screening just makes sense. The quality of life and productivity benefits of early diagnosis far, far outweigh the small cost of the genetic test... shocking that this is not yet done in Nova Scotia.Flag

Name: Sean Edwards on Jan 14, 2013Comments: This is very important. I myself am a a person with cf. I was born in 1976 and back then in Ont. they did not have screening. I was diagnosed cause of no weight gain and a bowel obsturction. If I was given the test when first born who know if it would of been a better outcome towards weight gain/Flag

Name: Stephen Way on Jan 14, 2013Comments: I have 2 grand children with Cystic Fibrosis and the younger one, diagnosed at birth is far healthier than the one not diagnosed until 18 months old. The cost of testing at birth far outways the additional cost to the health system resultant from diagnosis.Flag

Name: Julie Vale on Jan 14, 2013Comments: A government that does NOT promote newborn screening by default promotes illness and early fatality for our children. Newborn screening is the single most effective way to help children with Cystic Fibrosis, and it is IRRESPONSIBLE for government not to promote this as a standard of care for all newborns.Flag

It is not that expensive, but critically important to begin treatment immediately after birthFlag

Name: Patricia Sorensen on Jan 14, 2013Comments: My daughter was misdiagnosed with asthma and was not correctly diagnosed with CF until she was 9 years old. If Alberta had had newborn screening, she would have been correctly diagnosed and more importantly, correctly treated from infancy. Several issues we are dealing with now would not have occurred or would have had a much lessened impact if she had been correctly diagnosed and treated at infancy.Flag
