Cedar Brook Elementary needs a chess program!
According to SBISD's published goals for 2007-2008, schools should offer a wide range of extracurricular activities outside the classroom. We think Cedar Brook is a great school, and we would love to see some extracurricular activities offered. Many other SBISD schools offer chess, either before or after school, or as a class during the day. A chess club is relatively easy and inexpensive to start up. Houston has a great K-12 chess scene with events throughout the school year, and tournaments are a lot more fun when you go as a team. As the kids get older, some tournaments even give away college scholarships to the winners. Our children should not be missing out!
Chess has been proven to improve reading ability and standardized test scores. Chess teaches logic, problem solving, critical thinking, memory skills, patience, courage, and good sportsmanship. Chess is fun, and through it children learn that intellectual achievements can be fun and rewarding.
We request a scholastic chess program for our school, consisting of an after-school class open to all students led by a qualified chess teacher.
(We would like to send the petition to our principal by January 1, 2008, so please sign now!)
"Chess teaches foresight, by having to plan ahead; vigilance, by having to keep watch over the whole chess board; caution, by having to restrain ourselves from making hasty moves; and finally, we learn from chess the greatest maxim in life - that even when everything seems to be going badly for us we should not lose heart, but always hoping for a change for the better, steadfastly continue searching for the solutions to our problems."
