Name: Mark And Teri Mata on Nov 5, 2007Comments: Absolutely DO NOT change the school hours. I hope that the Board will be sensitive to how taxpayers revolve their lives and their carreers around the hours that our children will be in school. Also, think of how many middle school children provide the after school care for their siblings by unlocking the doors and watching the younger children until the parents get home from work. If middle school got out of school later than the grammar schools, how many lives would be disrupted and how much more $$ would be spent on childcareFlag

Name: Tracey Frye on Nov 5, 2007Comments: I strongly urge the BOE for CCSD93 to reconsider their proposed change to the start times for our district. The research that they are using to substantiate this change supports the benefits for students in high school, not middle school. How will our middle school children benefit if once they reach high school, this change in start times is not supported and they are forced to start earlier Do they have research or data that shows that impactFlag

Name: Sandy Dombrowski on Nov 7, 2007Comments: A few of the reasons we are not in favor of the time change include the fact that the high school still starts earlier than any of the schools. Changing the middle schoolers who will only have to adjust again 3 years later doesn't make sense. Also, some families depend on the middle schoolers to arrive home earlier than the younger children to babysit soon after school for whatever reason. It is, in our opinion, easier to wake a middle schooler earlier than it is to wake a kindergartener (at our house anyway). After school activities for the older children (band, clubs, sports) would be pushed later thus interferring with sports practices/games outside of the school. There are very few after school activities at the elementary level compared to middle school. Therefore, we are against the time change for district 93. Thank you for your consideration in this matter.Flag

Name: Elizabeth Malito on Nov 7, 2007Comments: The real problem with middle school is not the start time, it is the before school activities. Kids need to get up at 5:30AM to do chorus. That is why my child is not in it. The 8AM start time does not affect her negatively. Also, my 3rd graders needs more sleep than my middle schooler. He would be negatively affected by the time change.Flag

Name: Robert Frusolone on Nov 7, 2007Comments: I feel that such a change would have a negative impact on both the Elementary and Middle School Children. This is especially true for the Middle School Children. They are required by District 93 to have 60 - 80 minutes of homework per night. Changing their hours to a later day would limit their extracurricular activities (School, Sports and Religious) and cause these kids added strain to complete homework much later in the evening. Please do not change their hours. Thank You.Flag

Name: Carolyn Milschewski on Nov 7, 2007Comments: I appreciate all the time that has gone into investigating this issue. I appreciate that the Board may think they are doing the best thing for our kids. I seriously disagree with changing the times. While I might agree it will make a small change in the scores of a few students, it will take a much greater toll on a larger group. Many people need their Junior High Students home to care for their younger sibling when they come home from school. We are forgetting all about discipline too, and not the discipline of a parent punishing a child. We need to instill discipline in our children that if you have committments like school, band, sports, Religious Education, etc., then they need to take care of themselves and get the right amount of sleep. I am continuing to see education systems and parents not preparing our children for the real world. When these kids get out of school, there are few jobs that would allow them to start at different time because it is too early and disrupts their circadian rythmn.Flag

After all, it's that the point of alot of what they do in middle school. The later start time will effect many athletes in that they will not have as much time after school to do homework before practice thus causing them to stay up later and still getting less sleep. Has anyone bothered to ask the kids what they thinkFlag

I thought the whole idea was to prepare the children for high school. Also, what about the after school sports How can we participate in our conference if we get out of school 45 minutes later Bad decision....Flag

Name: Carolyn Mondlock on Nov 7, 2007Comments: Reading all this GIVES me sleep deprivation. Please DO NOT change start times. The kids are all fine - I don't care what that Lenz woman is saying. She needs something better to do. Households in which both parents work will be negatively affected, along with the kids, if start times change. I would have to pay for aftercare - cannot afford! Are corporations going to change their start times to accommodate employees who have school-age children NO WAY! Let the middle schoolers start at 8:20 or 8:30, but don't change elementary 9:00 start time. Thank you.Flag

I have read the majority of the studies you listed, as well as, others regarding adolescent sleep patterns as related to school and whole-heartedly agree with them. However, in moving school start times, you are shifting the sleep problem to even younger children. Most of the material focuses on the benefit of the later start time for adolescents (generally meaning a child age 12-19Flag

Name: Thea Gawlik on Nov 7, 2007Comments: I don't believe that will solve the solution. The middle grade will probably still stay up late. Maybe the parent should play more of a part in bedtime. The middle school will get home later & have less time for homework. What about parents & their day care issues. I don't want to see the younger kids have to change. Getting out at 2:30, to do what Thank you.Flag
