Bill Stewart is a racist. While coaching VMI, the devout Christian called one of his players the "N-word." Thomas Haskins, a former VMI All-America running back who played for the Keydets during each of Stewart's three seasons as head coach, said yesterday that he remembers the incident because "I was right there. I was in the mix." The player involved was Kelly Cook, a teammate with whom Haskins said he was close.
Haskins, a former Highland Springs High standout who is African-American, said Stewart made his controversial comment "in the heat of the moment. It was just an unfortunate situation that will always be a part of [Stewart]. It's like getting cut when you're small. That mark will still be there when you're 50 years old."
