How dare they rob a hero of his job and home

Gavin Harvey (Pic:SM)

The terrible injuries suffered by Gavin Harvey when he was blown up in Afghanistan would have killed most people.

He lost both legs and had appalling internal injuries. But he lived because he was determined to survive for the sake of his wife and two young daughters aged two and four.

When he was fit enough, Gavin wanted to go back to working for the Army. He couldn’t return to the front line but he was committed to serving his country. It was all he had wanted to do since he was a teenager.

But his suffering, loyalty and sense of duty count for nothing with the Ministry of Defence. He is being thrown out as part of the savage spending cuts being inflicted on the armed forces.

To treat this hero in such a despicable way shames our nation. Gavin not only won’t have a job – and little prospect of getting one in these difficult times – but he will lose his home as his family live in MoD property.

The British people must not accept what is being done to him. The Defence Secretary, Liam Fox, should step in today to guarantee that Gavin can stay on. And if he doesn’t, then his boss David Cameron must act.

Not just for Gavin either, but for all the 200-plus amputees. None must be thrown out as if they are disposable.

We can never repay the debt we owe such men. The very least we as a nation can do is make sure they have a job and a home.
