We Need Family Preservation

Program cuts, brought on by a $1.1-million deficit at Children's Aid Society of Algoma, could see more local children removed from their homes.

On April 12, CAS Algoma will lay off six workers and one supervisor who make up an in-home program that helps at-risk children in "open child protection families."

Removing supports from families that are at risk will only put more children into care.

CAS Algoma was short $2.5 million, but last month, the province gave another $1.4 million, cutting its ongoing budget deficit down to $1.1 million.

It is felt that not providing the funding that would keep open programs like Family Preservation seems "shortsighted," on the part of the Ministry of Child and Youth Services.

These cuts are in stark contrast to the message the Ministry of Child and Youth Services sent in 2006, when it passed a bill which, among other things, required CAS to work with families to help them take better care of their children.

I know that it isn't just CAS Algoma that is experiencing these cut backs either.  It's happening all over.

This is setting CAS back 10-15 years.  Losing Family Preservation is going to cause more problems for both parents and the society.  In the long run, the children that the agency is meant to protect are going to be the ones that are harmed by this cutback.

Let's pass the work and voice are concerns.  Please sign in support for your local CAS Family Preservation programs.
