In 2004 over 50,000 drivers of hybrid vehicles were granted HOV stickers which allowed them to travel in the carpool lane alone. This is now being taken away in July 2011. My mother, a full time/over time working mother, owns a Prius with HOV stickers. She has had the luxury of being able to come home about an hour early each night because of the carpool lane. 

This new measure will be devastating since 90% of my mother’s time is spent commuting. This is not surprising because over 200,000 people commute every day.

Her ability to come home early has helped our family immensely. We have gotten to see and spend more quality time with her. Now, with the new California measure, my mother will lose her stickers, her time and time spent with the people she loves, her family.

I am urging that every Prius owner truly consider what they will be ‘really’ losing in July 2011. The sticker gives you more than the ability to save time and money; it gives you the ability to spend 'your time' however you choose. For my mother, it’s quality time with the ones she loves.
