When bad things happen, do you take action or do you simply put your head down and let it blow over? Too many of us watch when people in power act unilaterally and make decisions without consultation. Too many of us watch while people get fired for spurious reasons and their confidential termination letter is broadly circulated. Too many of us don’t say anything even when we know that our organizations are not operating under good governance. We, the undersigned, were all volunteer members of the Canadian Women in Technology (CanWIT) National Advisory Board, nd CANWIT is a division of Canadian Advanced Technology Alliance. We have decided we won’t be sitting back while an organization gets away with at the very least a violation of good business practices and at the worst… well we’ll let the lawyers decide. CanWIT is run by John Reid and we watched as he did all of the above. We believe in consultation, transparency, integrity, ethical behavior and strong governance. As board members we didn’t see any of that coming from CATA. We therefore can’t continue, our consciences demand that we act – and ACT we have. All X of the national executive has resigned and we want to make it clear why we did so. While we will continue to volunteer to help more women in technology thrive, we won’t be doing it with CATA. That brand is tarnished, and sadly so is the CanWIT brand we worked so hard to build. We call for you to join us and send a message to John Reid that CanWIT should be closed down by signing this petition. The brand is simply too tarnished to continue.
