551 Andrea TompkinsWe, the undersigned, hereby petition Cambridge City Council to make ample land available for all recognised independent punt operators to continue to work on their traditional stretch of the River Cam, and to recognise the rich history that independent punt operators bring to Cambridge. Moreover, we ask the Council to realise that a virtual punt monopoly by the Scudamores Punt Company kills fair competition and prevents tourists and Cambridge residents from alternative and often financially fairer tours of the heritage rich River Cam. Such a monopoly would be vindication of years of aggressive touting tactics by Scudamores, which has been misrepresented in the press, and allow the company to impose prices and conditions on tourists and residents without effective restriction.

571 Kirsty ArmstrongIndependent punting must be allowed on the Cam. Giving one company a de facto monopoly is simply unacceptable and kills off fair pricing for tourist and regulars to the river. In the age of deregulation of utilities and services in the hallowed name of market forces and competition, can the Council justify giving Scudamores a free hand to run the river?

574 Ben Ackersa trade monopoly is never good, especially when it is over a traditional industry such as this. It is almost impossible for members of the public to punt without scudamores getting something out of it as they are expensive to buy and maintain. Also many residents who push tours privately are more knowledgeable than the chauffers you get with the companies. I was once assured that canada geese migrated all the way from canada to cambridge. 595 Josh PhippsI would just like to say, i Did work for scudamore's and it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Moreover the experience was further improved by a good bit of competition for touts, i think having the independent punters actually helped me earn a bit more money because they actually gave me a reason to 'work' rather than just turn up. Not to mention most of them are just great people out there trying to earn a living like the rest of us...

598 jonathan hallfair trade and monopoly prevention are rightly becoming one of the most important issues of the modern age and cambridge county council are far from above reproach on such matters. if this goes ahead it shall be a slur on cambridges image. i shall make as many tourists and locals aware of this come the peak punting times. good luck to the petition.
599 AnonymousI worked for Scudamores a few summers ago and, while I have no complaints with the way they operate, I believe in fair competition and fair prices for customers.
