Comments: The studio was seeded from gift money from a former provost, Rochus Vogt. I am very concerned that if there is not enough "grass roots" support for this facility, it will no longer exist.

Comments: The music studio has been an incredible resource to the scientific community at Caltech. A high percentage of Caltech students participate in musical activities. Music is a highly mathematical endeavor, and by its nature fits the scientific mind. Not only does having a recording studio allow the Caltech students and faculty to share musical experiences, the studio is used for on-campus activities, training videos, etc. The recording studio has become a hub for many positive and enriching experiences on the Caltech campus. Keep the recording studio going in the new Hameetman Center!

Comments: The ability to play music is a skill that is not exclusive to anyone except those who don't try. The ability to record music at Caltech should be available to all who are willing to try as well. Recording music is a great opportunity that has been afforded us through the technological advances of society and the generous contributions of Caltech. Please keep the studio for all members of the Caltech community to use and enjoy. It is a sanctuary of creativity and a meeting place of music and technology. It would be sad to lose such a cherished resource.

Comments: During my four years at Caltech, I used the Caltech studio extensively for rehearsal and recording. While I was a member of the Caltech Monday Jazz Ensemble, and could play one a week with the group, I found that the studio was crucial to my personal development as a musician, as it gave me the freedom to play and record my own music, on my own time. This musical opportunity helped me develop as a musician, and also helped me get through Caltech as a scientist. With a heavy course load, going to the studio to play and record was one of my favorite activities to maintain my sanity. I hope that Caltech will understand the importance of the recording studio to the members of its community and preserve (or improve!) it as part of the new student center.

Comments: I'm a 5th year grad student. In the last two years, I've used the recording studio to record two on-campus jazz combos that I play in. One of those combos played at the April 2011 Caltech Jazz Festival, while the other combo played at Red Door in September 2011 and was the central entertainment at two well-attended on-campus "Jazz and Cocktails" parties funded by the Grad Student Council in January 2012 and September 2012. Besides its recording capabilities, the recording studio is also currently the only place on campus where student jazz combos can rehearse, because no other space has a decent drum kit alongside a piano. It's safe to say that without the recording studio, we would not have been able to rehearse, and neither of the above student combos would ever have formed.

Comments: The Caltech Recording Studio has been a great resource not only for our band members, but also for aspiring musicians to have a place to record their projects. It is truly a valuable resource to a pertinent fraction of the undergraduate community. I certainly have benefited from having the studio around.

Comments: The Caltech Recording Studio has been vital to the music production of Avery House's annual House Rotation Video. Fluid Dynamics a cappella group also uses the studio to sing/record holiday grahams to family and friends. Furthermore, it gives others a unique opportunity to learn about music production, recording/mixing/editing music, etc. The Recording Studio is one of the unique resources that I've fallen in love with and cherish immensely at Caltech, please keep it alive!

Comments: I play bass in a rock band with a couple other Caltech students, and the studio is an invaluable resource. It is very well equipped both for both high quality recording, and for having equipment for live shows. I am very grateful for its existence, and think that it is very important to have for members of the Caltech community who are interested in music.

Comments: Having the recording studio is a benefit I have enjoyed greatly during my time as an undergrad at Caltech. Ever since I got membership, I have used it for several personal recordings. Having access has also benefited several student groups that I am involved in since we were able to use the equipment to record voice-overs for House videos or get high quality recordings of my a cappella group, a tool greatly beneficial for our overall improvement and ability to post things online. Please keep the studio available! It is an invaluable resource for many people. It is not only an enrichment not available without huge personal cost but also a great source of stress relief. There is more than one time where I would use the space to just relax, record, and mix to forget about all the other stuff going on.

Comments: The recording studio holds memories of making music simply for the joy and beauty of it. A respite from the academic setting at Caltech. It has also been a powerful resource for making house videos and music video projects.

Comments: Save it! Music is a great way for us students to express ourselves and take a break from all the studying we do. Is there no way to keep the studio and do renovations at the same time? We shouldn't lose something simply because we are given a new gift.

Comments: The Caltech studio is an amazing resource for any student who wants to record and produce music. Continuing the studio in the new student center is important because it is the only place we can record with professional quality and learn production techniques. Plus it grants creative students access to tools they otherwise couldn't afford so that they can complete their music projects. Keep the studio alive!
