Call for a Ceasefire in Afghanistan
Dear Honorable Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, We write to you on behalf of the people of Afghanistan and '2 Million Friends' from around the world to strongly urge the United Nations to broker a ceasefire in Afghanistan. We the ordinary people of Afghanistan ask the United Nations to call on all the warring parties, including NATO, the Karzai government, competing warlords and the Taliban, to lay down their weapons. Each day the war continues will mean a continuing humanitarian disaster for Afghan people. The NATO nations should seize this summit opportunity to cooperatively allocate the funds necessary for a full reconstruction campaign in Afghanistan. We have met with Dr. Sima Samar, Chairperson of the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission and are focusing our deep commitment to support this action in Afghanistan on this coming International Day of Human Rights, December 10. 2012. As the Afghan Peace Volunteers, a grassroots group of ordinary, multi-ethnic Afghans, we seek a life of non-violence, equality, self-reliance and the unity of all people. We are dedicated to working hard with our Afghan brothers and sisters and the growing members of our world-wide "family" who have also signed (on to) this letter. We believe this firm declaration of cease-fire from the United Nations - coupled with the vast majority of Afghans' wish to live without wars - will make a real difference on the ground, where we live. We await your response with hope. Sincerely, for the ordinary people of Afghanistan - the Afghan Peace Volunteers
