Name: Carl Meyer on Nov 8, 2002State: HICountry: USComments: The 'official' NWS surf forecasts don't even come close to the quality and reliability of Pat Caldwells forecast. Pat Caldwell provided an unequivocal disclaimer on his 'local size' forecast, so the reasons given for removing his site are baseless. The vague, inaccurate NWS forecast should be scrapped in the interest of public safety, not Pat Caldwells site! Bring Pats site back!Flag

Name: Jason Nakasato on Nov 8, 2002State: HICountry: USComments: i firmly support the revival of Pat's forecast. of all those i have used, his was and is the most accurate. furthermore, there was no warning period before his site was teminated and we (users of his site) were not even given ample time to find an alternate forecast to use. Additionally, i feel that the reasoning given in regard to Pat not using NWS standardized forecast heights is bullshit. It was clear that his site was not intended for scientific research, but rather as a means to supply the public with an accurate forecast of surf conditions. Thus, I pray for the return of Pat's site and do appreciate everyone's support.Flag

Name: Hilton Surferdude Ishimoto on Nov 8, 2002State: HICountry: USComments: I'm glad that Pat's site will be restored ... I'll bet that those people who downed didn't even know about the various sites that exists...but common sense is the best indicator ... no matter what any site says you need to use plain common sense (too bad some people just don't know where to find it). If just having one site for information then we should have only one church to go to (as if that's not cornfusing enough) and only one school to go to ... and only one fast food place to eat (Rainbow's in Kapahulu but then there's Zippys in Kahala) only one surf spot to surf ... only one type of car to drive ... only one place to get shave-ice (Matsumoto's ...no arguement there but then there's Aoki's too) only one surf was to use (Sex Wax) only one kind board to use (I won't go there) only one tooth paste to use (and some people need to use just any kind) so good thing we live in the only bestest place in the world ..HAWAII, USA!!!!! so bring back Pat's site so we can have choice and get excited about the surf forecast even though its not a perfect science forecasting the surf ... but still fun to see if the swell really did come in or not. And if it does we still need to rely on our common sense if we have any or at least someone else's. aloha Hilton Surferdude Ishimoto aka BigDog Dreamin'Flag

Name: Jimmy Freese on Nov 8, 2002State: HICountry: USComments: This site kept me safer. I surf waves up to 12' - 15' but tend not to feel comfortable in waves bigger than that. the site would let me know when the swell was going to peak so if I knew if things were building or on the decline. In short I feel a lot less safe for myself with the site now down.Flag

Name: Chris Phillips on Nov 8, 2002State: HICountry: USComments: Obviously some people..uh..hum..rick grigg... are insecure of the intelligence and ocean knowledge Pat possesses. If anyone could even come close to producing a site as informative as Mr. Caldwells forecast we would gladly support it, but it has not happened. Pat is like a life vest to hundreds of surfers who also pass their knowledge on to other people, including tourists and novice surfers. The obvious ego battle going on over this issue is putting more people at risk of injury or death out in the water then ever before. Appropriate information and the odds of change were hands down best provided by Mr. Caldwell. I personally use at least 15 different sources including cams and other forecasts to check the surf. Pat was and is "The Man". Bring him back or give him a new website. Without Pat, we might as well be surfing 15 foot (local style) Pipe at night with 600 hundred other guys all wearin blindfolds.... Long Live Pat Caldwell!!!Flag

He has provided invaluable information for water safety and recreation. His forecasts are very detailed and accurate and are used surfers, boaters, fishermen throughout the state of Hawaii. Please bring back Pat's forecast - perhaps it can be presented only in the new wave face scale to avoid confusion with the NWS sites. Thank you.Flag

Maybe the Hawaii office of the NWS should have Patrick Caldwell doing their surf/ocean forecast. Then they can put out the most accurate forecast available for the people of Hawaii and the safety of the public. That's what it's all about rightFlag

Name: Bruce Hansen on Nov 8, 2002State: HICountry:Comments: In Mr. Caldwell's defense the portion of his site where the traditional surf values was displayed was only available by clicking on a small text link. This means the person made a choice to see "conflicting information". In my eyes you are not making the aquatic world any safer. In fact I think you are making it more dangerous. I say this for two reasons. 1. By not having the traditional surf height you are reporting in fashion that is different for me and my 20 years of surfing experience. Therefore I am unable to understand the potential conditions and their relationship to me. Without my reference I now do not know how the reported conditions relate to my ability. 2. Without a surf report with the comprehensive nature of that Mr. Caldewell had produced I head out in to surf with no idea of what will happen. When Mr. Caldwell reported beware of "front runners and a rapidly increasing swell" I knew exactly what to expect. My current surf report now comes from a TV weather woman who I am pretty sure has never surfed. I fail to see how this has made things safer for me. Sincerly, Mr Bruce Hansen, Pukalani, HIFlag

Name: Gary Bignami on Nov 8, 2002State: HICountry:Comments: Pat's forecast gave the most accurate forecast, in terms of wind strength and direction and wave arrival time, height and direction. The "local" vs. wave face measurement argument is silly. For one thing, only people "in the know" seek out Caldwell's forecast. These people are much more likely to be familiar with local wave conditions and can interpret factors such as a 6 ft wave at Pipeline is a lot more hazardous than a 6 ft wave at Canoes in Waikiki (even if they have the same face height).Flag
