I loved my job and continue to have very good feelings about the University. Bringing a law suit against a Butler student for stating his opinions seems very misguided.Flag

It is a sad day when an institution of higher learning chooses to resort to lawsuits to silence the speech of one of its own students.Flag

Name: Anonymous on Oct 19, 2009Name (Please do NOT choose to display your name anonymously): Deborah McKee KellyComments: I find the lawsuit against Jess Zimmerman to be a violation of his First Amendment rights. He expressed opinions about a situation that he felt was wrong, and although those opinions may have been mean or embarrassing for the affected parties, they did not rise to the level of defamation or libel. As an alum of Butler University, I was disappointed to hear of the lawsuit. I hope the lawsuit will be retracted, and I hope there will be some healthy discussion and debate about the rights and responsibilities of students and administrators.Flag

In earlier years, those efforts effectively intimidated the faculty. I hope that is much less the case now, as reasoned faculty voices speak up on behalf of ideals that the Administration is again bent on undermining.Flag

Name: Anonymous on Oct 19, 2009Name (Please do NOT choose to display your name anonymously): Bruce WightmanComments: Butler should reconsider its stance. The institution is doing itself a lot of damage by appearing to suppress first ammendment expression. As anyone who has a public persona knows, negative feedback can come with expressing a position or advocating for an institutional policy. Are Butler administrators really so thin-skinned that they deemed these opinions threateningFlag

Before becoming a minister, I taught for nearly 30 years in 3 different universities, first in English and then in law. If any of them had done such a thing as Butler University has done now, I would have been completely horrified. I hope Butler will choose immediately to withdraw the suit and thus preserve at least a little of its now seriously damaged reputation as an institution of higher learning.Flag

I am neither right now, and I would certainly not suggest that any upcoming freshman attend Butler University if they value their right to oppose actions that they see as unjust. Which everyone should value, by the way.Flag
