Comments: I am professor at the University of Southern California. Personally, I do not have a dog in this fight. However, I have been following this most unfortunate situation from the beginning. I implore President Fong and his colleagues to end this madness. This cannot have a happy ending for Butler.

Comments: Jess Zimmerman holds every right to freedom of speech in this case and there is not substantial enough evience to prove his online writings to be libelous or slanderous in any way. This university is setting a legal precedent, and nothing more, with this student and it is a disgrace. You cannot silence this student as an example of power.

Comments: American colleges and universities do their very best when they teach students to challenge and question. When a university sues a currently enrolled student for questioning, it sends a message that truth is not its highest value. This lawsuit is a very sad reflection on the leadership of a university unable to engage in meaningful discussion with all stakeholders in the learning and teaching dynamic — faculty, students, and staff — and a failure to recognize the the true mission of an institution of higher learning (teaching and research).

Comments: Class of 2009 BA Anthropology At this moment, under the current circumstances, I am ashamed to call Butler Alma Mater. That the university could so blatantly establish a climate of fear is embarrassing. Students, under this precedent, are afraid to speak out for fear of lawsuits and allusions to campus violence. I hope the President and his administration will, once and for all, place the values of critical debate and liberal arts over professional reputation and politics.
