155 Douglas A. EaglesI offer my sympathies to those of you who seek to defend the openness that is the heart of any academy in the face of a President whose arrogance leaves no room for compromise. As one who voted Republican for most of my life (64 years) and was turned away by the deliberate ignorance and resulting incompetence shown by this administration, fragmenting our society domestically, losing our friends and tarnishing our reputation internationally, I would protest vehemently if my own university were to even entertain the thought of hosting President Bush's library. I do recognize the political realities for SMU in welcoming the library but strongly support the petition to separate the partisan institute from SMU, a renowned university that has contributed so much to the United States by educating, in an intellectually free environment, those willing (even eager) to learn .

160 David A. HounshellAs an alumnus of SMU, I am vehemently opposed to giving George W. Bush a bully pulpit on campus for the right-wing policies and perspectives of the Bush Administration, an administration that is bankrupting the United States of America both fiscally and morally. Such a decision is counter to the highest ideals of a university and absolutely contradicts the principles of United Methodism. I am in solidarity with my colleagues at SMU who oppose the institute's location on campus.

169 Prof. J. Morgan KousserUniversities and partisan think tanks should be separate. The reputation of SMU, where my mother went, would be damaged beyond recognition forever if the university were to be perceived as the inveterate defender of a controversial administration. FDR, Nixon, and Reagan all have libraries entirely separate from educational institutions, and W should, as well.
170 Juliet RothmanA partisan political institute on a university campus belies the spirit of free enquiry, impartial discussion and debate, and equality of rights for everyone. The impact of such an action would be felt far beyond the boundaries of the particular institution involved here. Its ripples, and the precedent it would be setting, would be felt throughout academia.

181 Prof. Andrew RubinI grew up in Dallas, attended secondary school there, and am now a professor at Georgetown University. I find it unconscionable that SMU would agree to serve as both a library for material, most of which of I understand have been redacted and concealed from the public over the past 7 years at a great expense to the democracy which this administration claims to affirm both at home and abroad, as well as the ideals of academic freedom which are crucial and indispensable to the advancement of Enlightened knowledge. Furthermore, to establish a Presidential Library with political "think tank" outside the domain of the university, as if university professors and students are incapable of thinking for themselves, undermines the credibility as well as the mission of Southern Methodist University. The separation between political society and the university must be separated at all costs. The agreement is a grave disservice to the integrity, dignity, and values for which I have known SMU to stand historically. Sincerely, Professor Andrew N. Rubin Assistant Professor of English Alumnus of St. Mark's School of Texas, Dallas 1987

189 Sheela AthreyaI am strongly opposed to the Bush Library plan for SMU. Regardless of one's political affiliation, such a plan is objectionable because an organization with a political agenda on campus violates the basic tenets of an educational institution and has dangerous implications for academic freedom.
