To

His Excellency Adam Wood

Lt Governor, Isle of Man

We the undersigned have become convinced that severe damage is being done to the Anglican Diocese of Sodor and Man by the flawed leadership of Bishop Robert Paterson and to a lesser extent the Archdeacon of Man, Andie Brown.

This is evidenced principally but by no means entirely in their prolonged bullying and attempts to intimidate individual members of the clergy. We seek the cessation of the abuse and ask that steps be taken to persuade the Bishop and the Archdeacon to resign their positions.

The Archbishops of Canterbury and York have over the past months been made increasingly aware of the situation and will receive copies of this petition.

I am so very sad that the lovely man Dr Jules Gomes is suffering under the hands of a person(s) who should be doing everything he can to support him in his exceptional ability to unite and encourage church attendance. I can't bring myself to call Robert Paterson anything other than a bully.

When more than one credible voice alleges the same thing, there has got to be some truth in the allegations. Bullying - whether it is overt or covert - must stop.

The bishop is meant to be a man of the cloth and instead he is a mean nasty man who bullies those who have differing opinions. He should be made to resign his post and leave the island.

I totally agree with you Tom. Dr Jules Gomes is not the only member of the clergy who has received or is still receiving bullying from the Bishop and so together let's put our faith into action. "For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power, love, and self-control." 2 Timothy 1:7

Rev Gomes is doing a sterling job, having turned the church around - the santuary is now crowded on Sunday AM so extra chairs have to be brought in - there is a vibrant youth ministry - Dr Gomes preaches only the Bible - sounds great to me - what is the bishop's problem?

This is most distressing for our congregation the way Canon Jules has been treated but especially the way the Bishop and Deacon are going about it!!

My main reservation in signing the petition was the inclusion of the Archdeacon in the indictment. As the Bishop's principal assistant I presume that he must execute the wishes of his senior officer - or resign. However, having read the comments of Haydn Rawstrom, with which I wholeheartedly agree, I know that I should support the justified complaints of so many people whose opinions I very much respect. We should remember that this is yet another public protest which follows the one in 2013 in support of that fine clergyman, the Reverend Robert Ferguson. This causes me great concern about the condition of the Anglican Church on the Island.
