This petition is to ask Network Rail to consider building a new railway station to serve the village of Castle Donington in Leicestershire. There is already a railway line running through the village, running from Long Eaton to Willington avoiding Derby, and a new station here and the introduction of passenger trains along this route would serve two purposes: 1) To give people in the village direct railway access with Nottingham and Birmingham, and the route to potentially be used as an alternative through route between Burton and Nottingham rather than having to reverse at Derby. 2) To allow charter trains to use the line when the yearly Download Festival is on at the nearby Castle Donington Racetrack. Charter trains from all across the UK can take rock music fans almost directly to the venue, thus easing the pressure on the M1/M42/A50/A42 and other nearby roads which would otherwise become congested. Platforms big enough to handle eight coaches would be sufficient, and during the time of the festival using this line would also ease congestion on the main Birmingham-Derby and Leicester-Nottingham railway lines. In future, a link line could be built from Castle Donington to connect with the reopening of the Burton-Leicester line to passenger traffic via a junction at Coalville. Passenger services between Birmingham/Stoke and Nottingham could be re-routed via this line, calling at Castle Donington, and then rejoin the Nottingham line at Sawley Junction. This would allow bottle-necking around Derby to be relieved. We, the undersigned, ask for Network Rail to please consider this when they decide to draw up a list of new stations.
