Name: Jennifer Schertz on Oct 28, 2002State: ILComments: First let me say that this bill is outrageous and will only punish those of us who care enough about are dogs to be resonsible owners. Approving this bill will not stop those owners who fight their dogs or let them run lose, simply because they could care less whether there is a law or not. I think the article I have posted below sums everything up. I believe that every state should follow in the footsteps as New York Did. Please read the following.New York state prohibits breed-specific legislation --- By Sue Weiss President, Long Island Coalition of Dog Fanciers NY becomes latest state to judge dogs on deeds, not breeds Ten years in the Assembly without passage! No Senate sponsor around — then along came the Long Island Coalition of Dog Fanciers and rattled the crates. The coalition solicited the help of the American Kennel Club and Associated Dog Clubs of new York in a massive action to bring Assembly Bill 3028 to the attention of the dog world. AKC sent 11,000 letters to New York dog fanciers with our petition of support for the bill. We asked that fanciers copy petitions and give them to others to circulate and that they send letters and make phone calls to get legislators to support the bill. Fanciers responded with 6000 signatures on the petitions. The coalition convinced State Senator Dean Skelos of Rockville Centre on Long Island that Assembleywoman Elizabeth Connelly's bill was worth of his support, and he agreed to sponsor it. A campaign of phone calls and letters followed to get the bill out of one committee after another. The bill was amended and re-amended, and, at one point, the breed-specific prohibition was dropped. The coalition and AKC objected and the coalition withdrew its support; the prohibition was put back a week later. We held our collective breath as the roller coaster ride continued for another week while the Legislature continued debate. On August 3, the last Sunday evening before the Legislative session was due to end, I got an 11 p.m. call that the Senate and Assembly had agreed and the bill would pass. Ten minutes later the bubble burst when another call brought the news that last minute politicking put it on hold again. We went to bed not knowing whether it would pass. At 8 a.m., we heard that lawmakers met all night and there was still no news. We had just about given up hope when, at 10:15 a.m., we learned by fax transmission that the Senate had passed the bill. Later, the Assembly followed suit. We waited again for the governor to sign the bill. Finally, on September 3, he signed. New York is now the 12th state to prohibit passage of breed-specific legislation; dogs will now be judged on the deeds, not their breeds.Flag

I feel you are doing the responsiable dog owners of america a grave injustice. I have never been bit by a pit bull, bulldog, rottie or other (Dangerous Breed) But I have been bit quite a few times by Labs, Cockers and Shih Tzus. You will only punish the law abiding people while the law breakers will carry on no matter what bills you pass. Jive law inforcement more teeth and the money to back them and stop wasting my TAX money on more useless junk. Thank you Karen Mora REP.Flag

Name: Mary Ann Flynn on Oct 28, 2002State: NJComments: Pit Bulls and mixes are the most lovable dogs I have ever spent time with. My sister has a beautiful pit bull with two small children and they are constantly playing with her. She is so gentle. I have fostered pit bulls and mixes and think they are the greatest. Your bill is targeting the responsible pet owners rather than the people who use and abuse them. If this bill does pass, it would definitely effect the way I vote.Flag

Name: Julie Bowles on Oct 28, 2002State: NJComments: It's my understanding all dogs are required to be licensed. This bill is like penalizing sports cars for being involved in deadly accidents, or getting speeding tickets, when it is the owner/operator who is creating the hazard. Yes, all dog owners should be scrutinized, if there is a standard for responsible ownership. Who will dictate Who will enforce this, or any legislation I think alcohol and illegal drugs pose a greater public hazard. Some of these dogs fall into the hands of drug/alcohol problematic people; and this bill takes responsible ownership away from everyone while overlooking the people who abuse these animals. I'm willing to bet these people who abuse pit bulls would be dangerous even without a dog. It's the people who are the problem, not the dog.Flag

I know this is a bill for ownership but this will effect those of us who are responsible owners just passing through who are bringing revenue into your state. This is an unjust Bill for those who are responsible owners. Please consider a Bill to handle the owners of the noted "vicious" dogs. Punish them when an offense is commited and not those who are responsible owners.Flag

Name: Yvonne McCalla on Oct 29, 2002State: NJComments: This bill will only punish the responsible dog owners and the best of the breed. Those who participate in illegal activity with canine's will continue or move onto another breed. Get tough with those. Making it next to impossible to own a "pit bull type" dog will result in innocent, loving dogs to be put down. Something needs to be done, but this targets the wrong people/dogs.Flag

Name: Anne Schmidt on Oct 29, 2002State: PAComments: Passing this bill will only penalize the responsible citizens and their dogs. We are the people licensing our dogs and making sure that they are under control. This type of legislation will not affect those persons who engage in dog fighting, abuse/neglect/cruelty of this breed. They do not license their dogs, and most of the time are engaged in criminal activities such as drug trafficking, dog fighting, etc. The only solution is to enforce the animal cruelty laws already on the books, with stiffer fines and mandatory jail time. One must note that these criminals will always move on to other large, powerful breeds such as Rottweilers, Dobermans, Boxers,German Shepherds, etc. Are we as a society going to methodically eradicate each breed fancied by these criminals Punish the irresponsible owners instead of targeting an innocent breed. Dogs are alot like children - they are what you raise them to be.Flag
