Name: Laura Strzelecki on Oct 28, 2002State: NJComments: I find this appauling that you will need to require an additional license to own a pit bull. Pit bulls raised properly are one of the most loyal, obedient breeds, and can be great family pets. I have had pit bulls in the past, and they were just as gentle as any other dog I have ever owned.Flag

Name: Desiree Neland on Oct 28, 2002State: NJComments: This bill will only penalize the law abiding Pit Bull owners and over run the shelters perminately with Pits and leave all other dogs on the street because the ACO's won't have anywhere to put them. This was not well thought out and the assembly man that proposed this bill obviously knows nothing about how a "Shelter" in NJ is run.Flag

Name: Donna Osmond on Oct 28, 2002State: NJComments: I have been a member of an all-breed rescue organization for the past 6 years and seen many pit bull or pit bull type dogs come through the "system". The problem is not the dogs, it's the unethical people. If the animal abuse laws in NJ were as strict as they are in NY, we could lock the offenders up and not have to punish the law abiding pet owners.Flag

Name: Jessica Fornaro on Oct 28, 2002State: NJComments: I fostered a pitbull mix & she was the sweetest dog I ever met. It all depends on the people who handle the dogs - if not the pitbull, they will find another dog to use in fights & it will start all over again.Flag

Name: Sarah Gana on Oct 28, 2002State: TXComments: The WAF and Alabama Supreme court recently ruled that genetically no dog is any more vicious than the next. Any dog of any breed can be 'made' mean. The owners need to be held liable, not the dogs.Flag

Name: Laurie Garrison on Oct 28, 2002State: NJComments: I volunteer at the Monmouth County SPCA in Eatontown, NJ. About 50% of the dogs we take in are Pit Bulls. 99.9% of these dogs are sweet and loving. The breed is not the problem, people are. Any powerful breed in the wrong hands has the potential to be a dangerous dog. Breed-specific legislation only puts the onus on the breed, not the owner. Make it difficult to own Pits, these people will then own Rotties. Take away Rotties, they will own Akitas, and so on. Unless you are willing to legislate away dog ownership, I believe breed-specific laws will not work. Thank you.Flag

Name: Maria Fortunato on Oct 28, 2002State: NJComments: This bill does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING in preventing certain people in our society in obtaining and using these animals for illegal reasons. It only makes it more difficult for the already responsible pet owner who keeps their dog(s) licensed, updated on shots, has taken them to training classes and spayed or neutered. Start going after those who have given this wonderful breed a bad name.Flag

Name: Ellen Odell on Oct 28, 2002State: CAComments: Although I am not a resident of NJ, I fear that if this insiudious bill passes in your state, it is only a matter of time before this spreads to other parts of the country. Aggressve dogs - of ANY breed - are A PEOPLE PROBLEM - not a breed of dog problem! Are you aware that in England these are called the "nanny dogs" because they love children so much and are used as baby sitters Or that some of them are therapy or even SAR dogs I take photos of animals in a shelter for a website here in So. Cal. (www.amrt.net) and invariably the dogs that give me the most "kisses" are the pit bulls! Quite honestly, BSL appears to me to be "taking the easy way out" - instead of addressing the REAL problem. Perhaps because the dogs don't pay taxes .... and can't fight back Rather cowardly, don't you think Ellen Odell Rossmoor, CA. bulls!!Flag

It is unfair to ban one type of dog and allow the owner of same to abuse and misuse another breed causing another Bill.Flag

Name: Larna Grossi on Oct 28, 2002State: RIComments: I feel as though it is everyone's right to own whatever breed they choose to own. All pet owners are responsible for their pet and keeping the dog restrained and on a leash in public, or in a fenced in yard while on the property of the owner. If this bill is passed, who knows what type of dog will be targeted next for this type of bill.Flag
