Name: Carlos Fortes Lopes, BA,BS,MA on Oct 3, 2007Comments: There's no comment about Mr. Harrington's saying. I would only say that this is fruit of his work. Please note that he has done nothing for this community, even though this Capevredean community is the heart of Brockton. Just look at the businesses in this city, and you will be able able to understand my words. Good luck to everyone, and god bless all.Flag

Name: Anonymous on Oct 11, 2007Comments: I think this is outrageous! He should not blame Cape Verdeans for the violence that is going on in the community.I am not from Brockton but I have many family members that do live in Brockton and I have witnessed violence before and you cannot say that it is only Cape Verdeans that are the cause of all this. Everyone is to blame. You cannot just pick individuals and blame them for the violence.Flag

Name: Aristides Cardoso on Oct 11, 2007Comments: In a capitalist society, the argument goes, property crime is inevitable. Capitalism is the product of class antagonism. The lower classes will always commit crimes against the property owned by the upper classes. The true property crime, however, isthe capitalistic exploitation of lower-class labor by the upper classes. This is inevitable and necessary for the perpetuation of capitalism. Since the upper classes require the lower classes to perpetuate the system, a certain amount of lower-class crime is tolerated as the price of maintaining the system and the advantages it provides for the upper classes. Another approach also address such crimes as embezzlement, fraud, and violations of antitrust regulations and fair business practices, and human right violations to be okey. The reason such crimes are committed, is that capitalist competition forces the middle and upper classes to steal, cheat, annd do anything else necessary to survive in the marketplace. These kinds of crime would be committed primarily by members of the middle and upper classes. They committ the crimes in order to retain their position in the marketplace, for losing in the market means losing economic and social status. Therefore, it is essential to succeed. Finally, we must note what the policy implications of this theory of criminal behavior must be. Public efforts will only serve to protect the upper classes from excessive victimization by the lower classes. Crimes committed by upper classes against lower classes, however, would not be diligently investigated or punished or even considered criminal. Who gets victimized, and therefore who, bears the cost of crime, Cape Verdeans according to Mr. As a result, we can see why Mr. Harrington blames Cape Verdean for crime in the city because he has been taking into consideration that only those crimes committed by lower classes would be considered as crimes.Flag

Name: James J. Lopes on Oct 11, 2007Comments: For three hundred years Cape Verdean-Americans have built and sustained a national reputation for being a hard-working, productive, moral and law-abiding society. We no not come from a culture ofviolence nor do we encourage one. Anyone who suggests that we are the root of the problem plaguing cities like Brockton is misinformed and just plain ignorant. Why should someone so wrong about us stay in office The problem of juvenile violence is an American one, born out of the hip hop culture and other American media that glorifies crime. If immigrant children are assimilating into that clearly American culture, it is America to blame. Any politician who does not understand this does not belong in public office.Flag
