The Internet is a fundamentally insecure medium, and sholud not be trusted to carry out the vitally important democratic process for any level of government.Voter apathy is a funny issue. Politicians are eager to bring it up as a problem, but the truth is that low voter turnouts are not a problem at all. They are a symptom of the real problem, which is lack of interest in or knowledge of the politics of the area. I didn't vote in the last civic election, not because of inconvenience, but because I was fairly new to Surrey and didn't have a good handle on the candidates or their platforms. Was it wrong that I didn't vote? Should I have cast an uninformed vote instead? Absolutely not. It would be great if we had 100% voter turnout and everybody knew the issues, candidates, and platforms, but if there's a choice between low turnouts and uninformed votes, I'll take the former any day of the week.

We have much better things to spend that money on.Second, the kind of security used by banks and online commerce is vastly different from the kind required for online voting. They use proprietary, opaque ssetyms that are designed specifically to prevent the kind of openness and peer-reviewability that is vital to the voting process. What's the payoff here, anyways? We already have a convenient, secure, easy system that works. If people aren't interested in participating in the democratic process (and that includes not only voting, but the research beforehand) then they just aren't interested, and an expensive new online voting system isn't going to change that.

    Comments: There's barely any good "enough" internet around here...Rogers and Bell think their internet is fast but they honestly don't realize that even speeds between 150-250 mbps is pretty slow. Google's 1 Gbps network is amazing and could really expand network technology in Canada! We definitely deserve this kind of internet! It's definitely amazing that Google is offering this but I just ask that it be delivered not only to Markham but to Kitchener-Waterloo and Cambridge as well.
