Last year, I began a written correspondence with the filmmaker Benjamin Geissler, after finally managing to acquire a copy of his seminal documentary, Finding Pictures. Originally a work about the lost murals of the Polish-Jewish artist and author, Bruno Schulz, whilst filming in Drohobycz, Ukraine, Herr Geissler and his team discovered the missing picture chamber. More information on the specifics of the discovery will soon follow as this campaign develops. In the meantime, please visit the website of Benjamin Geissler Filmproduktion: www.benjamingeissler.de A short time after the discovery of the murals, the original artwork was dismembered by Yad Vashem, without the permission of the Ukrainian Ministry of Culture. Fragments of Schulz’s drawings were taken to Israel, creating an acrimonious (ongoing) dispute between Ukrainian, Polish and Israeli authorities. The issue has sparked much debate regarding the “ownership” of Schulz – an assimilated Galician Jew, born in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, whom wrote in Polish, favoured within the Polish literary-intelligentsia, and was murdered in 1942 during the Holocaust. In order to capture the original spirit of Schulz’s work, Benjamin Geissler has reconstructed a true-to-scale multimedia installation of the mural room. Soon, this wonderful work will begin an exhibiton tour of international venues. For the past six months, I have been writing to appropriate venues across the UK, specifically in the City of Manchester. Unfortunately, the responses have been slender and dismissive. The profile of Bruno Schulz as an author is continuing to grow in the English-speaking world. I believe that this recreation of his final work should be displayed within the UK. The intellectual quality and integrity of his paintings, as well as the story behind their creation, offers much for both those familiar and uninitiated with Schulz’s work. Manchester, being a city of liberal-tradition, as well as the cultural hub of Northern England, would provide a perfectly suitable and comfortable temporary home for the display. Of course, an endeavour such as bringing Bruno Schulz to Manchester requires time and money. The campaign is not asking for coin, just support. In applications for funding, knowing that a large, supportive community exists - especially one that would welcome the arrival of the picture chamber in Manchester - will undoubtedly improve the chances of this happening. Please, sign the petition, so that your name and support can be used to help bring Bruno Schulz to Manchester.
