Hey all, The goal with this petition is to get noticed and hopefully bring an amazing new documentary call "Blackfish" to Halifax for all to enjoy. For those of you who have heard of it you'll know why I want to bring it to Halifax and show this work of genius to as many people as possible. If you haven't heard of it here is a small synopsis: Blackfish tells the story of Tilikum, a performing killer whale that killed several people while in captivity. Along the way, director-producer Gabriela Cowperthwaite compiles shocking footage and emotional interviews to explore the creature’s extraordinary nature, the species’ cruel treatment in captivity, the lives and losses of the trainers and the pressures brought to bear by the mulit-billion dollar sea-park industry. This emotionally wrenching, tautly structured story challenges us to consider our relationship to nature and reveals how little we humans have learned from these highly intelligent and enormously sentient fellow mammals. When I first asked the Blackfish team why they didn't bring it to show in Halifax they told me that they simply needed a theater to ask for a copy of the movie to show. However, no theater in Halifax is going to show a new documentary if I just ask nicely. I need to show them there is interest and potential ticket sales that would warrant a viewing. That is where you all come in. I'm trying to get the film played some time in September/October. Halifax is a great city for film, especially ocean-minded media. The Cove, Sharkwater, Revolution and other marine-based documentaries had phenomenal receptions when they were first shown here and I want to do the same with Blackfish. Please sign up to show your interest in bringing this amazing documentary to Halifax. Once we get enough signatures I will take this petition to theaters around Halifax and see if anyone will present a viewing.
