Name: Thea Churchill-Robson on Aug 18, 2003State: VTCountry: USComments: Such laws as this - allowing insurance companies to discriminate by dog breed - would only further exacerbate the problem of overcrowding in shelters. It's nuture, not "nature", because viciousnesss is not in any dog's nature. We have an intact-male German Shepherd, from a working line, and a 3 month old baby - you cannot find a dog more devoted and adoring of a child. It is the intelligence of the guard breeds that makes them such good dogs with children. In the opinion of those working in the insurance companies (I know, my father owns an agency) the insurance companies are only trying to do this to up prices to help regain their losses from recent years.Flag

Name: Lynn Wilson on Aug 18, 2003State: PACountry: USComments: This is wrong. That would be the same as convicting someone do to race or religion as sex. I own a Rottie and he is the best pet ever. I don't want to have someone else choosing for me what breed of dog I may or maynot have. I am a responsible home owner so I have insurance. I am a responsible pet owner and don't want to be treated as if I am not.Flag

Let's fight them!Flag

Name: Elizabeth Lindblom on Aug 18, 2003State: MACountry: USComments: My German Shepherd Dog is a certified Theraphy Dog. He has also passed his AKC Canine Good Citizens and the US Temperment Test and is in the process of being trained for Obediance Competitions. Because he is a German Shepherd Dog, I may have to give him up because he is "black listed" on my Insurance Companies list of "Bad Dogs". I feel any dog will bite, no matter what the breed. It all goes back to their breeding (good temperment parents) and how they are raised. Heavy socialization and Obediance is the key. I know of several people who own very aggressive vicious mutts, but they have NO trouble getting Insurance. Their mutts have never attended Obediance classes and have never been socialized. That PROVES aggressiveness in a dog is NOT breed related all the time. That, in my opinion, is Breed Discrimination. I think it should be determined case by case, dog by dog, NOT by breed. I don't understand why the Insurance Companies can't work with the owners of these "Bad Dog" breeds, especially if we are responsible owners. I don't have any trouble bringing my GSD into Hospitals or Nursing Homes, but he may not be able to live here anymore because of him being a GSD and my Insurance Companies policy in regards to his breed. There is something terribly wrong with that picture. I would even be willing to pay extra for a "Bite Rider" on my insurance policy, but my insurance company is NOT willing to do this. My dog is a GSD and that is that. Here in Massachusetts, there are NO insurance companies that will insure you if you have a dog on their "Bad Dog" list. NONE. I have researched and researched and it's very frustrating. Most owners that I know that have a GSD have not notified their Insurance companies that they have one. I am seeing more and more GSD's ending up in shelters and being euthanized because their owners could not keep them due to their Insurance Companies policy. Please, lets change this policy some Insurance Companies have. Give the responsible owners a chance. Thank you.Flag

Name: Michele Avery on Aug 18, 2003State: PACountry: USComments: A dog is made "vicious" due to it's inhumane treatment and should not represent the breed as a whole. It is morally wrong for society to punish certain breeds as a whole because of the misfortunes of those ABUSED and MISTREATED dogs who bite. If raised properly, those breeds who are currently at issue can be the most wonderful, loving, affectionate, loyal pets one could meet. Do not destroy their chances of finding homes. Help end the suffering these breeds endure instead by combating dog fighting, and increasing investigation and prosecution of animal abuse!Flag

Name: Dee Gajda on Aug 18, 2003State: ILCountry: USComments: I have owned German Shepherds for 15 years and have been with State Farm Insurance for 30 years. I find it appalling that an insurance company could cancell me because of the breed of my dogs. My dogs are AKC registered with advanced titles in obedience, tracking, agility and herding both in the US and Canada. My dogs are well trained and are upstanding citizens. We have been complimented how well the dogs are behaved in major motels and campgrounds. Without ever having any claims, how could I be cancelled Sincerely, Dee GajdaFlag
