Dear Mr Cameron Re: Decision to axe Breastfeeding Awareness Week We are shocked and saddened to hear of your Government's decision to remove support for Breastfeeding Awareness Week. While we understand that this is one of many measures being taken to reduce government spending, we are concerned that the pursuit of a quick (and very small) saving will lead to the undoing of many years of crucial work in raising the awareness of the undeniable benefits of breastfeeding for babies, mothers and wider society. We feel very strongly that although organisations such as the NCT work to promote breastfeeding, removal of government funding will in effect send a message of removal of government support; if we want to genuinely increase breastfeeding across the spectrum of our society then the message needs to be consistent and delivered to all - surely the only way to do this is via a government sponsored public health message? We are very concerned that this is a hasty decision which will negatively impact on many generations to come and so we ask that you give this issue further thought. Yours faithfully
