The petition
The current Fairfax County Budget cycle is creating difficulties for all County departments and services. The decisions our elected officials have to make are complex, but the end result is a severe threat to the "World Class" quality of our schools as a whole, and the probability that our most disadvantaged students will bear the brunt of many of the cuts that may be required if funding is not found.
The Braddock District Coalition has been formed to make sure that funding for Fairfax County schools remains a priority and not a discretionary expenditure. This fiscal crisis - created by the Board of Supervisors recommendation of another flat transfer to FCPS and the School Boards' approval of a budget that cuts core resources and point of service personnel away from our students - has put schools in an untenable circumstance. Individual schools and parents are in survival mode - everyone is fighting for their small piece of the pie rather than working together to ensure that our "World Class" school system does not deteriorate in this temporary economic downturn.
The goals of this coalition are:
For Parents and Families --
- To raise community awareness of the FY09 Fairfax County Schools budget crisis.
- To empower the parents to exercise their rights as direct participants in the School Boards decision-making process.
For the School Board and County Board of Supervisors --
- To encourage our School Board to exercise strong leadership and represent their true constituents (the students and schools)
- To challenge the School Board and Board of Supervisors to find and/or develop funding solutions that will preserve the "World Class" quality of Fairfax County schools.
- To encourage our Board of Supervisors to prioritize school funding in all years, regardless of temporary economic setbacks.
Please sign this petition in support of the work we are doing with the Fairfax County School Board and the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. Together we can find solutions that will stabilize funding in all years, while also preserving and providing the tools to expect a high level of performance from our diverse school communities.
