We urge the Chancellor George Osbourne to appoint Sharon Bowles as the first ever female Governor of the Bank of England, to bring truly independent oversight to the banking sector. She is not from the Bank or the City or the Financial Services Authority, so was not sitting watching the boom bubbles grow, doing nothing to pop them. Sharon knows more about financial services legislation than just about anyone else, thanks to chairing the European Parliament's Monetary and Economic Affairs Committee as Lib Dem MEP for the South East. The Government needs to show it is serious about shaking up the 'old boys' culture and restoring public faith in banking by choosing a true independent for the job.
