Bon Secours Port Jervis Maternity Unit

The City of Port Jervis and The Town of Deerpark is literally isolated from the rest of the county by a mountain range. The closest maternity unit is about 20 minutes when the weather is good. A significant population who would use the maternity unit is more than likely not to have their own transportation.
The intent by the Hospital to close the maternity unit and eliminate the local pediatricians employed through Bon Secours Medical Group would create a major hardship to the community at large. Quite often the young mothers who would use this service are those who are at the bottom of the socioeconomic strata; the working poor and they don't have the means to travel over the mountain to Middletown. One option that would be open to them in an emergency is to deliver their baby in the local hospitals ER. This we believe is an unacceptable solution; delivering your baby in an ER is just adding additional risk to the birthing process.
