Name: Debra Wallace on Jun 20, 2008Comments: Making home birth illegal does not ensure the safety of women. Many women are committed to home birth whether it's legal or not - so it's important to keep home birth safe and legal. Not only that, but as the petition points out, home birth has better outcomes than hospital birth.Flag

Not everyone has a birth center as an option. Homebirth also allows for a safe and affordable birth option for those who are uninsured since hospital costs are outrageous!Flag

Name: Debby Sapp on Jun 20, 2008Comments: I agree with this, but the petition doesn't address that DEMs are safe birth attendants as well. Look at Tew's research from the Netherlands. Those midwives aren't CNMs or CPMs. Also, using the words "care provider" instead of "birth attendant" gives the idea that a woman should only choose from those birth attendants who have some sort of medical background. If I want my granny or my best friend to attend me at my birth, that's my right and she shouldn't get in trouble for doing so. America thinks AMA and ACOG are all about science on the issues on which they issue statements. Their statements on homebirth should show people how wrong this is.Flag

Name: Montse Anderson on Jun 20, 2008Comments: I firmly believe that every woman has the right to decide the manner in which she births her child. There is no evidence to support the AMA and ACOGs claims that midwife assisted births are more dangerous than hospital births. I support hospital births in the event of emergencies and complicated pregnancies but not for normal births. Perhaps doctors should become better trained at managing normal births and insist on changing hospital protocols so it's friendly for mothers who desire natural births. Until then, we will continue to birth at home and in birthing centers with midwives who have a much better understanding of natural, normal births than doctors.Flag

Name: Jessica Groves, AAHCC on Jun 20, 2008Comments: As a mother who has birthed twice out-of-hospital in a free-standing birth center and due in late 2008 with plans to birth at home, I know how important CHOICE is in childbirth. To me, as long as I am low risk and healthy, I know my baby and I will have the best and safest birthing experience when we can do so where we feel comfortable, have nothing interfering with our bonding and breastfeeding and be surrounded by friends familiy and siblings at birth. Since women today are being denied their choices especially women delivering twins, breech babies or women having VBACs, then homebirth cannot be taken away as they already are denied from birthing in birth centers. That would only leave these women with the choice of birthing in-hospital and some multiple pregnancies, many breech pregnancies and most VBAC pregnancies are low-risk and have every reason to be tried and so many hospital physicians will not even consider giving them a vaginal birth as a choice. Taking homebirth away denies women of their right to choose where she gives birth to her baby which is her fundamental right. What will they do then, arrest women who give birth on their toilet thinking they were just going to the bathroom but -no, that was the baby coming out! Or what about women who don't make it to the hospital and give birth in the car or on the side of the road, will they too be facing criminal charges Homebirth can never be illegal. It is against what makes our American society free and democratic. Lastly, what is best for women and babies Not birthing in-hospital if they are low-risk. In the US we have higher c/s rates and death rates of both mom and baby than other industrialized countries because our women are giving birth in the hospital 99% of the time and are with OBs 92% of the time. Those countries with higher homebirth rates and with the majority of their births attended by patient, creative thinking midwives with skills in long labors and complex birth positions/presentations have the best outcomes for both mother and baby. That says it all. We are safer attended by midwives in any out-of-hospital setting including and especially at home.Flag

Name: Eliana Tsukroff on Jun 20, 2008Comments: While I chose to birth my two children in a hospital, I want to continue to have the option to birth at home the next time if I so desire. I found the constant interuptions at the hospital detrimental to the deep concentration and quiet that I needed to labor and birth properly. At my first son's birth, attended by midmives, in a hospital almost three years ago I had an epidural and could not feel anything as I pushed him out. I was unhappy with this and had a feeling of unreality. "Did he really come from me" I had a very difficult start to nursing, partly because he was so sleepy he wouldn't stay awake long enough to nurse and bring in my milk supply properly. He was born at 36 1/2 weeks which is slightly early, but the epidural and other pain-relieving drugs I was given in the hospital added to his sleepiness, making a difficult start to nursing even more challenging. At my second son's birth, attended by midwives, in a hospital one year ago I was able to birth medication free. I stayed home for most of my labor and had a doula and my husband as labor assistants. After I arrived at the hospital and settled in I was fully dilated and pushed right away. Afterward, nursing was easy with a fully alert baby. If we have another child, I want to have the right to birth at home if we decide to.Flag

Name: Debra Jasen on Jun 20, 2008Comments: Both of my children were born with the assistance of midwives. My first was born in a birth center with the help of a CNM. My second was born at home with the help of a CPM. Both boys got stuck - shoulder dystocias. Both midwives used the Gaskin Maneuver to get them out. No episiotomies, no c-sections, no emergency crews, no doctors freaking out, no painful procedures. Just midwives, doing what they know how to do, safely delivering my babies. The midwives made the effort to get to know me. They know my children. They became like family. They were gentle and loving. They were knowledgeable about birth, and had many years of experience. They were exactly the people I wanted at the births of my children. They were respectful of my birth plans, and respectful of my bodily integrity. My sons are the most precious beings in my life. I was very careful when selecting who I would trust to help bring them safely into this world. I'm thankful that I had the freedom to choose midwives.Flag

Also look at the rates of Cesarean sections in those same places. And look at the economics of homebirth versus hospital birth. Is THAT what's driving this resolutionFlag

Name: Lindsey Chambers on Jun 20, 2008Comments: I delivered my first child totally unmedicated attended by a midwife at a birth center. This birth center is out of business now, and I have no other options for giving birth outside a hospital other than at home. I, along with my midwife, would like to make the decision about where I birth my next child. The government has absolutely no business telling where I can birth my child. What next Telling me what house I can live in or what car I can drive or what colors of clothing I can wear. Making homebirth illegal is irresponsible. It will force women to go "underground" to have homebirth, possibly without any medical care. It is much better to license and train midwives to legally attend homebirths. This is America. Home of the free. Dictating where I can give birth is infringing on my personal freedoms and darkening the reputation of America as being a land of freedom and opportunity.Flag

Let that stay as it is. And by the way, pay attention to what you are doing to personal freedom. Hospital birth is dangerous to women and babies. It is getting more so every year.Flag
