Name: Marc S Taylor on Dec 8, 2011Comments: I've written directly to Professor Eastwood, requiring him to evidence Professor Chipman's assertion that "detailed consideration" was given to the course, I have appraised him of the extremely truncated period of totally one sided communication's from the university and suggested an abuse of power, resources and crass insensitivity as to the timing of it with respect to this years intake in particular. I'll keep plodding onwards,ta for now. MarcFlag

There is no other course offered in the UK that provides the same quality or is run in the same accessible manner.Flag

Name: Robert O'Connor on Dec 9, 2011Comments: In view of the recent report from the IEEM identifing ecological practical skills gap, this appears to be a knee-jerk reaction to budgetary contraints, without consideration of the need to train the future generation of guardians of what is left of UK biodiversity. Please reconsider this decision, or engage in real and meaningful dialogue regarding providing an alternative to this excellent resource.Flag

Name: Richard Aisbitt on Dec 9, 2011Comments: As a final-year student on the MSc course and an active biological recorder and conservationist, I am horrified that the course should be closed. It feeds scientists with the expertise to make valid judgements into the biological recording and conservation community. There is no other course that offers this mix of identification and recording skills with the scientific rigour needed for the analysis of data.Flag

Name: Ruth Kernohan on Dec 9, 2011Comments: I am in my first year on the Masters course. I enrolled due to its renowned reputation, the advancement of my career and professional recognition as an ecologist. I am personally concerned about the course structure and organisation should it be running to a close. I have colleagues who are interested in starting this programme next year, who obviously also have concerns!Flag

Name: Graham Carter on Dec 9, 2011Comments: We need to keep a close eye on our environment, particularly at a time of climate change, with implications for flaura and fauna. The expert workers produced as a result of this almost unique course are vital in the monitoring of these changes; the course should not be axed.Flag

Name: Mick Burton on Dec 9, 2011Comments: As an alumni of this programme I value greatly the contribution it has made to my understanding and practice of biological recording and botanic / bryological ID. From a casual interest in plants (and none in bryology) I now submit thousands of records annually to my VC Recorders. It has also had a profound impact on my ability to contribute to a landscape wide restoration project, The Great Fen. I have written to Professor Press and the Presidents of BSBI & BBS. The latter, Dr David Holyoak, showed me the letter he wrote to the Vice Chancellor. There seems to be a lot of weight behind the campaign to save this important programme. Join in!Flag

The closure of Birmingham's short courses, following on from the recent axing of David Streeters MSc at U o Sussex, just shows the lack of long-term consideration of training in botanical skills.Flag
