We, the undersigned, wish to express our strong opposition to any legislation or practices which discourage the open discussion of issues surrounding sexuality, sexual orientation, and gender identity in the classroom. We strongly believe that current practices in the classroom, most notably, a lack of discussion of these issues, perpetuates the stigma and harmful misconceptions associated with such topics. Legislation must be revised and current approaches changed, if we, as a society, want to encourage openness and acceptance within our culture and eradicate homophobia and its negative repercussions.
I have been reading through the stories you all are sharing in the comments and I am honestly moved to tears by your bravery. This is far bigger than I ever imagined it would be when I started this simple draft. The credit for this momentum belongs entirely to the people who decided that silence was no longer an option.

School is supposed to be a place where everyone feels safe being who they are. ignoring this issue just makes it worse for the kids who are struggling.
