The petition
The hydro companies in Canada and the US are currently doing a very outdated practice. With the increase of modern energy-saving pulsed electronic loads, this is placing alot of strain on the neutral return wire (the wire that returns electrical current back to the substation. As a result, the overloaded neutral had to have additional ground rods added to divert the excess current via the ground.
Due to the undersized neutral wire the EARTH has become the path of least resistance that usually causes up to 70% of the total current consumed to return back to the substation on the surface the ground.
People and places who are in the return path experience health problems, problems with sensitive electronics etc. Dairy farms who are in the return path experience problems with their cattle (e.g.: reduced milk production).
Also these pulsed loads generate harmonics which creates dirty electricity. Dirty Electricity contaminates the electrical system and causes billions of dollars of damage to the Ameriacan industry annually. These harmonics usually cause overheating in electrcal motors and other appliances thus shortening their lifespan.
Harmonics also cause computers and data systems to have glitches, crash, and/or stop working completely. Harmonics can easily be mitigated by adding filters to the electrical system and or by using power supplies that incorporate power factor correction/built-in filters.
Tell the federal government, and the hydro companies by signing this petition that the earth, more specifically people and their properties are not a return path for the electricity.
These bills will guarantee that the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) gets updated:
*Reduction of harmonics will eliminate the common problems described above and create a stronger, more healthier economy and a more productive future.
*The earth will no longer be used in place of a wire as a return path back to the power station.
