The bike theft problem still exists at the University of Saskatchewan. In 2006, 30 bikes were reported stolen off Campus. Also, many people are reluctant to ride to school, or ride their favorite bike school due to this problem. By signing this petition, you support the idea of creating a secure bike compound on the university. Details are yet to be worked out, but the solution is intended to have next to nothing in operational costs and only a small initial investment for the fence (or wall) and video surveillance. You will NOT be forced to pay anything by signing this petition, both now and in the future. (I don\'t even think there is a way of doing that here anyway : ) Who can sign this petition Anyone who is a stakeholder in this matter. This includes anyone who regularly attends the U of S campus on a regular basis. Any non-students that fit this criteria are encouraged to sign as well. ******Please include your NSID****** - It adds credibility to your signature. It will never be displayed, sold or used to send emails. It will only be used when showing University Administration this petition. You will not be emailed anything to do with this petition, as long as you uncheck all the boxes below. If you wish to have an update on the matter, visit www.ubike.ca The petition list made public will only include names and comments. The petition may also be used to gauge how large to make the compound, if it gets built. Please answer the questions below appropriately. ****************************************************************************************************** ************** Below is extra information on the matter, which is optional to read ************** ****************************************************************************************************** Encouraging students to ride to school only creates postive results. As you know, - Bikes have zero emissions. Done. - Bikes keep students fit so they can excel in their classes. - Bikes take more automobiles off campus. - Bike parking is extremely cheap, for the student and the university, when compared to automobile parking. - Biking to university provides the ultimate freedom to the student, as the can come and go as they please. - Biking is now as option for people who take DART buses to the university, as there are bike racks on DART buses. ------------------------------- More Details ------------------------------- Another great fact about bike compounds is that they are more secure that was one would initially think. With today\'s technology, entry to the compound could be made through the use of a student card, just like the PAC or a hotel room. The compound can also have video surveillance, which would obviously be time stamped. If an crime were to happen, you have video to find out what time it happened as well as a database log that indicated entry and exit times of users. You now have adequate evidence to arrest suspects. This alone is a huge deterrent. Another to note is that, according to Campus Safety, 9 out of 10 criminals are non-students. Student only access would take care of that. Aesthetics is another concern with bike compounds. Two options here are proper location and/or an eye-pleasing wall vs a fence. For instance, there is a compound at RUH, but not many people see it. This will definetly be a concern - but it can be done. Convenience- yet something else to keep in mind - as that is why many choose biking. Convenience will not be ignored. There are other options to consider as well. The bike compound is currently viewed as the best solution so far, as it offers a relatively cheap solution that still offers state of the art technology for security. Obviously, it also serves the most as well. Other options still considered are: bike lockers and a bike shop/compound (possibly in the new Place Riel). If you have any other ideas, please either leave a comment or email ubike@ubike.ca **********************Final Note***************************** We shouldn\'t be forced to ride an old bike to school just because criminals tell us to - especially when a feasible solution exists. This petition, unlike some petitions, will actually be used. It will be used to show University Administration and/or USSU that there is support for this compound. Please encourage others to sign.
