Prescott is renowned as a bicycling Mecca. Yet there are almost no bicycle parking racks at public buildings and downtown businesses. Furthermore, the racks that are available tend to be the obsolete low, narrow racks that only lock in the front wheels of skinny tire bikes -- a thief's wonderland. For a city that is so dedicated to tourist income -- including sponsoring of the Whiskey Off-Road Mountain Bike event --the unwillingness to fund and install bike parking racks is difficult to comprehend. Prescott has a very real chance of becoming known as the mountain biking capital of Western America. Failing to provide the most basic infrastructure for this profitable identity violates common sense. An important related issue - perhaps even more important than the theft or tourist dollar matters -- is the inevitable consequence of not having adequate bike parking in Prescott: bikers have no choice but to lock their bikes on fences, sign posts, and other semi-secure structures. These inappropriate but necessary options create hazards for pedestrians, and especially handicapped, elderly or wheel-chair occupants.
