Betty's lease is illegal ! DEADLINE:  APRIL 11 , 2012 - NEXT COURT DATE. Please sign this petition and get as many others to sign, too. Email as many of your contacts as possible. You can sign online anonymously, if you don't want anyone to see your name on the Internet. BRIEF STATEMENT OF THE ISSUE: Now in Brooklyn, New York, a judge has reviewed an illegal lease. This lease is an example that it is becoming more and more common that dishonest landlords include clauses in their leases that are unfair and illegal to intentionally deceive their tenants; we want the judge to declare this lease illegal, and order the landlord to re-write all his leases to fully comport with basic fairness and the law. WE NEED YOU ! THE PURPOSE of this petition is to give the judge an indication of the community conscience, and to put a stop to these kinds of crimes, deceptive business practices; the Brooklyn District Attorney's office did not help us. As recently as Wednesday, Feb. 29, 2012, Anthony Barosky, at the DA's action center, told us..." but, you agreed to this...didn't you ....didn't you.. ". NO. The tenant DID NOT agree to give up her civil rights just because she signed a lease in 1973. The DA's office works for the landlord's interests, not the tenants' interests.  DETAILS: Now in Brooklyn, New York, landlord-tenant court, located at 141 Livingston St, Rm 407, Judge Lydia C. Lai has reviewed an illegal lease by landlord Gilbert Polinsky, to wit: he claimed that his tenant, Betty P, had ( 1 ) no right to a jury trial [ this is illegal ! ], ( 2 ) could not make counter-claims [ this is illegal ! ], ( 3 ) could not ask for attorney's fees [ New York law says she can, see Real Property law section 234: Tenants' right to recover attorneys' fees... ] and ( 4 ) could not share her apartment with another occupant [ New York's room-mate law, says she can, Real Property law sec. 235f Unlawful restrictions on occupancy ]. WE WANT EVERY LANDLORD TO KNOW THAT HE CANNOT DRAFT ILLEGAL LEASES TO DECEIVE HIS TENANTS INTO BELIEVING THAT THEY SIGNED THEIR RIGHTS AWAY SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY SIGNED A LEASE, THAT HE CANNOT PREY ON THE IGNORANCE OF HIS TENANTS LIKE A VULTURE.
