Name: Mark Haxby on Jun 8, 2009Comments: I live on North Uist and the only way to receive broadband is via hebrides.net, part of the Connected Communities broadband network. The cost of this service is £24.46 per month for a connection speed of up to 1Mb. That is eight times slower than BT offers but costs almost £9 per month more. At times of peak usage, early evenings and weekends, this connection speed reduces to that of dial up making it virtually unusable. During periods of adverse weather the robustness of the project is questioned, the service often goes down, usually requiring engineers and parts to come form the mainland taking time for the service to be restored. If this occurs outside normal working hours or over a weekend it can be days before the system is back on line. This is surprising as the infrastructure is designed for use in the Hebrides, surely the weather was taken into account when the project was devised. I am sure the cost if installing and maintaining the Western Isles Connected Communities project to date has far surpassed any costs BT may have incurred upgrading the 21 exchanges left out of the 2005 upgrade program. I think now the only way to provide a fast, reliable broadband network at a fair price equalling that of the mainland is to upgrade these exchanges. Thus giving people living on the Islands the choice and service people in the rest of the UK have come to expect.Flag

Name: Anonymous on Jun 9, 2009Comments: My broadband is so slow it is almost like dial up, I also feel that I am discriminated against as we have to pay more for a slower service than in other areas, for example Sky Broadband offers a free (or very inexpensive) service in many areas but I have to pay £17 per month. In addition to this it becomes much slower at peak times.Flag

Name: Paul Bailey on Jun 9, 2009Comments: There are many properties in the Lemreway (south Lochs) area that cannot receive broadband. When I initially questioned this the exchange was used as the excuse. On a seperate note we have no mobile phone reception over here. I would be very grateful if you could look into this. All our enquiries have met a blank wallFlag

Name: Iain Morrison on Jun 9, 2009Comments: YES to better broadband. Or at the very least a fairer pricing structure. I get speeds of ~500 kbps but still pay the same as those who manage 3, 4 or 5 Mbps through the same provider.Flag

Name: Moira Baker on Jun 9, 2009Comments: I have 2 issues. 1. The most important one is that our tele-workers cannot receive broadband and it looks highly unlikely they EVER will which as a knock on effect on our business as well. 2. The way the radio broadband has been set up is ridiculous in that if 1 mast goes down, they ALL go down..... Must be something that can be done about that.Flag

Name: Sandra Hutton on Jun 13, 2009Comments: I think this is the single most important issue facing the Western Isles for its future. We need a broadband service equal to that of other parts of the U.K. NO MATTER HOW GOOD IT IS, Connected Communities cannot supply this. We need to have our exchanges updated to supply broadband via B.T. TO GIVE US EQUALITY WITH THE REST OF THE U.K.Flag
