Colonization and assimilation have killed thousands of Native Americans and their lasting effects are killing more and more each day. On the Pine Ridge reservation, the majority of residents face poverty, alcoholism, and depression which leads to premature mortality due to disease and now, more than ever, suicide. None of the ailments threatening the longevity of Native peoples until Euro-Americans displaced the Native population and they are a direct result of the colonial way of life.
