I keep hearing about how hard it is to overcome addictions such as drugs and alcohol. Most addicts make excuses for relapsing or for stepping off programs all together. As much as I think it is their fault, personally I think it is the government's part to do something instead of recycling these people in programs that have limited to varying levels of successes. They should look into programs that have much more proven data on life change and reform. The military can transform a civilian into a soldier, why can't it transform an addict into one as well. With the complete segregation that the United States armed forces is now, this would be an opportunity to put more boots and troop numbers while limiting fiscal budget. For example; a drunk driver has to pay for his/ or her "rehabilitation" as well as deduct the fines he/or she accumulated in the offenses to balance the debt. Once the legal fees and total cost of the programs are paid, then if he/she so chooses then they can enlist as a soldier to get the entry level pay. I do believe that there should be limitations on job and numbers of successful reformists that try to enlist, but that can be handled by military decision and subject to their own regulation. If you think this is a good idea, please sign.
