WHEREAS the community of Bedford has experienced significant population and assessment growth since the creation of HRM while during that time available public amenities and services have remained largely unchanged. THEREFORE we, the undersigned hereby petition the Council of Halifax Regional Municipality and the Minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations to take immediate steps to amend the Municipal Government Act so as to provide an effective, representative and democratic governance model for the residents of Bedford, including consideration of but not limited to: 1. a Community Council consisting of the Bedford Representative of HRM Council assisted by an advisory group of Bedford residents. 2. creation of a Bedford Service Commission with responsibility to provide advice and management regarding recreation, planning and infrastructure needs in Bedford. 3. such other amendments as are indicated to better provide for the development growth of Bedford.

Dr Anne Duffy, Canada6 years ago Comments: I am a relatively new resident in Bedford. While I had envisioned living in a cozy historic seaside community, the reality of living in a perpetual drive through is creeping in. Why do we not have a plan to conserve our town centre, our historic core and develop properly our waterfront Why are key seaside parcels of land for sale and/dominated by ugly private buildings Why is there no adequate ferry, train and rerouting of through traffic Why is there no adequate community centre What is going on My solution: Use the federal money to develop the ferry as part of a broader plan to develop the Bedford waterfront so that it will be a destination spot for Bedford and visitors. It seems the elected officials are lost for a vision, so tender a healthy competition between design students at Dalhousie and St marys - best green, beautiful, feasible and functional design wins. Make the waterfront for strolling, meeting, greeting, exercising..keep big box stores out. Then widen the bedford highway between halifax and bedford and bury the hydro lines and put in a REAL and dedicated bicycle path. The center lane as in other cities can become a transitional or swing lane accomodating the direction of rush hour traffic...more buses are a solution for large highway communities like Tantallon not for the Bedford Highway. We need a train as well as the ferry and the improved highway as per above. If this plan is put in place, the local businesses will flourish as Bedford will be a destination (by ferry, train and bike) place to go for a stroll, cycle or weekend coffee. It is now a Tim Hortons Drivethrough equivalent (no offense meant to TH). We need to preserve the waterfront and a greenbelt..why is land up for sale on the bedford waterfront...why is the council not acting to protect this and properly develop it
