The legislature finally caved and passed the law to penalize the destruction of our reefs. This victory belongs to the 613 of you who refused to let these corporations and greedy tourists kill off our oceans. Keep your eyes open because we need to make sure these fines are actually …

Scientists and marine biologists have proven that coral is being destroyed rapidly. Soon, there will be no more of this wonderful animal. They are covering only 0.17% of the ocean floor. Coral is home to 25% of all marine species, yet it's population has already decreased by 50%, and 60% of that is caused by humans. People, mainly tourists, are cutting off coral as souvenirs. Coral has many benefits from food to medicine. However, global warming, coral bleaching, and destructive fishing practices etc. are damaging the coral. In 93 countries, coral is threatened. We are trying to prevent the coral reefs from being completely demolished. We want to pass a law to protect the coral from harm. Our law consists of a fine for people destroying and taking coral. The fine will be 75% of the coral's value, because some coral is more valuable than others. Please help us by signing our petition and be moral with the coral! Thank you!

We just hit 500 signatures and the tourists who treat our reefs like a gift shop gift should be terrified. The people in charge are ignoring the data but they cannot ignore this many angry people demanding a real legal penalty.

First, who are "We?" And how are "we" going to enforce any of this? I absolutely agree with saving the coral, and ALL the natural world. But I would like to know more about who is behind this "movement" and how you are going to catch offenders, much less enforce a penalty?

As a marine biologist who studies coral bleaching, I am touched that students of this age, many of whom may never have seen a reef with their own eyes, are still so motivated to speak on the behalf of such a fragile, important ecosystem! I hope you make it to your competition and you can bet I'll forward this!

Hi there, thanks for your concern. I am a mentor who works with the Rossview Middle Robotics Gold Team — the team who has created this petition and intends to save the world's coral reefs. While I understand your point and appreciate you putting it out there, you have to understand that such a law or even a bill would bring attention to the state of the coral reefs and — for that matter — the state of the environment right now. If you want more information on the team's intentions and research, I encourage you to reply to this message and I will get you in touch with our team. Oh, and thanks for taking the time to sign the petition.

Thank you for putting in effort to shape our future instead of idly standing by as greed destroys our planet.

This precious resource needs protection because man cannot control his actions without consequence. Regulations are the only way to fight a global issue.
