Name: Shana on Mar 9, 2010Comments: The delay in exam dates means that not only do you have to postpone forthcoming engagements. For example a close friends wedding in the Bahamas! You can never be entirely sure that work will grant you the time off. If for any reason work say that I cannot take leave. I will end up missing my exams. At least publishing the dates in early January would be great.Flag

Name: John Miller on Mar 9, 2010Comments: As this petition statement says, we should have much more notice of when our exams are going to be held. Like many others, I have a career which means much more to me than just a job that simply helps to make ends during my time at Birkbeck. My career must, therefore, take priority, and I must ensure that I give adequate notice to my employer when booking time off for my exams. Work commitments have already been pencilled in for May and June, and I can no longer hold off agreeing to meetings and visits, some of which will be overseas. There is, therefore, a real risk that I will have to postpone sitting my exams until September - a scenario that is less than ideal. I am very disappointed with the Registry at Birkbeck: the College prides itself in understanding working people's lives and commitments and shaping its degree programmes accordingly; but there is no room for College pride in this instance, when our needs have been either ignored or overlooked at best. I visited the "My Birkbeck" desk in January to ask when the exams would be held; the official contacted the Registry, and I was told two days later that the exam timetable would be released mid-February or end of February. This has not happened, and we still have not firm date of publication. The whole process is clearly not being programme-managed effectively, and such failure is letting down the whole student community.Flag

As the school knows which classes will have exams, surely we could have a date by this point?Flag

Birkbeck has to realise that is not a convential college is an evening part time institution where its students have other commitments than studying.Flag
