Name: Danielle Witham on Feb 8, 2007Comments: Whilst I appreciate that the Town of Bassendean needs to operate in a financially sustainable manner, I do not beleive that developing what little parkland is left within the municipality is the answer. I would be more than happy to pay an environment / bush levy if the Town would guarantee that any monies raised would be used to enhance, maintain and conserve the natural assets in the area. Large and/or old trees should be registered as significant and protected for the current and future generations. Whilst I beleive the biodiversity conservation values in the Town are somewhat low, this knock 'em down approach that nibbles away at those few remaining areas is disconcerting to say the least. There is scientific evidence that denuded areas receive less and less rainfall, similarly thermo imagery shows us that highly urbanised landscapes (all roof, road and brick) are much hotter than those that arent. I ask the council whether this is their vision for Bassendean These trees also have a role to play in creating corridors and habitat for what remains of our wildlife.Flag
