Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council are proposing to build another 'industrial park' to the west of Barwell Village on former greenbelt land which, as a prime agricultural area, has been used for many years for growing crops and providing habitats for wildlife. 2,500 housing units are also planned on the site which will nearly double Barwell's current population. The River Tweed floodplain lies within the development boundary, part of which is a SINC protected area. Latest plans propose a new primary school/500 pupils to occupy land next to this wildlife site, including streams, ponds, grassland, mature trees and ancient hedgerows: water hens nest regularly, herons and ducks visit together with 18 other bird species in the last month (grid ref SP449765). Bats and newts are also present. It seems the Government are encouring us to go green and grow food locally, while planning to destroy prime farm land all around us.
Our group of residents is challenging the plans and have set up a facebook page: Barwell-residents-association and website http://www.barwellresidentssuegroup.org.uk in the hope that we can preserve our wildife, footpaths and ancient hedgerows. Please sign our petition if you'd like to help us.
