A call for the resignation Dr. Janet Barresi, Oklahoma State Superintendent of Public Instruction. Rationale: Oklahoma's students, families, and communities deserve a State Superintendent of Public Instruction who gives primary importance to student learning, quality teaching, and strong public education. Oklahoma cannot afford to enter the 21st Century by defunding important public education programs which focus on literacy, critical thinking, and improving instructional practice and resources. Dr. Barresi has abandoned Oklahoma's students by designing a budget for the Oklahoma Department of Education which defunds these essential programs: 1) Literacy First which targets elementary literacy and teacher training for more effective literacy programs; 2) Advanced Placement programs which build critical thinking skills needed for entering university studies, offer students opportunities for scholarships and college credit, and train teachers to effectively instruct students in Advanced Placement programs; 3) National Board Certification a rigorous professional development process for which Oklahoma has been a national leader and the effectiveness of which has been quantified and proven in student impact and progress; 4) Alternative Education which is an essential investment in Oklahoma's future, offering opportunities for training and graduation to students who would otherwise "fall through the gaps". By defunding these programs and focusing policy efforts disproportionately on testing and corporate interests such as tax breaks and charter schools which divert funds away from a free and fair public education for all, Dr. Barresi has demonstrated her ill will towards Oklahoma's public schools, their students, teachers, and communities and does not deserve the title "Oklahoma State Superintendent of Public Instruction".
