Smoking is estimated to kill 443,000 people per year and more alarming is that an additional 70,000 non-smokers die each year from secondhand smoke according to the American Cancer Society’s most recent data. Yes, 70,000 non-smokers die. 70,000 people who have never smoked a tobacco product a day in their life. Have you walked by one of the smoke sheds on campus and inhaled nothing but secondhand smoke? Or just walked to class and inhaled nothing but second hand smoke? Yes those smoke sheds are for the smokers, but how many students actually use them. Does the smoke not travel beyond the smoke sheds, affecting the innocent passerby? Just think that your fellow classmate may be contributing to your untimely death. It is time that Berkshire Community College went to a tobacco free campus and today we can make a difference by signing this petition to ban smoking at BCC.
