For the past 40 years minimum, Michigan State High Athletic Association (MSHAA) has implemented a rule that states no high school that is in the Association can travel over 300 miles for competition. The Association's rational is they want to put academics first before athletics. Everyone will agree with that rational, however that point is mute because Michigan ranks 39th in the country in terms of academics. Whereas, states such as California and Connecticut that have no restrictions for travel purposes for their high schools, rank in the top 5 in the country in terms of academics.

A ban of this travel restriction in Michigan will provide maximum exposure for our student/athletes. For example, our student/athletes can not participate in a national televised basketball tournament due to this rule! These games are televised on ESPN where the world is watching! Michigan athletes can not participate because of the 300 mile travel rule. That is counter productive to our student/athletes.
Are we preparing our student/athletes for college? The answer is no. High school is the time when we should start modeling the college expectations and lifestyle for potential student/athletes. We are speaking about the travel and learning what is expected for the student/athletes in managing time for studies and competition. Similar to when they arrive on a college campus. Let's start preparing our student/athletes in Michigan for college and give them the maximum expose for the potential of multiple scholarship opportunities.

-Simeon High School Basketball Team in Chicago traveled to Dubai this summer.
-The Top 100 Players Camp was held in Virginia in June...no one from Michigan.
-The Pre-Season Nationally televised game was on ESPN...no one from Michigan.
-Nationally Televised Games held during the season...no one from Michigan.
These examples are basketball related, however there are millions of similar stories of football, baseball, and volleyball teams that are losing out on opportunities for exposure.

With the ban of this 300 mile travel rule for Michigan High Schools, opportunities for student/athletes in Michigan to become more successful will increase.
