We the homeowners of Old Town Village have the right to enjoy a safe and clean environment for ourselves, our children, and our pets. Secondhand smoke has serious negative consequences and our residents have the right to live in old town village and enjoy the community benefits including the swimming pool, fitness room, Tot Lot, Court Yards, Roundhouse Patio, and benches without worrying about the long term impacts it could have on our families. Unlike other self-indulgent behaviors like eating fast food or drinking alcohol in public, secondhand smoke is not singularly linked to the participant. The negative effects of smoking in public carry over into other people’s lives with a tangible, measurable, and sometimes permanent impact. Additionally, cigarette butts account the majority of litter visible within the community. Therefore, eliminating smoking in the community, would increase the aesthetics and decrease the cleanup costs for all residents. Our residents have every right to allow smoking in their homes, garages, on decks, and in courtyards. However, the common areas belong to ALL residents, and should be enjoyed equally.
