Calling Attention to: College Students and New Orleans Residents in the Uptown Area Purpose of Petition: This petition is being circulated in order to call attention to the controversy regarding traffic cameras in the New Orleans area. By signing this petition you can assist Louisiana citizens in standing up for your rights as declared in the Bill of Rights of our United States Constitution. Many campaigns in the past have enacted petitions for a statewide camera ban, but some are unwilling to address the issue at local levels. With this campaign, I would like to demonstrate that we are being subjected to a violation of our first amendment rights on every level of government. The main criticism of this system is the excessive amount of revenue produced by these traffic camera citations. As citizens, we do have the right to safety on roadways, but this system of ticketing is not the best outlet for enhancing safety. With these camera citations, the system violates many of our amendment rights, including our right to due process of law in the 5th, 7th, and 14th amendments. In addition, how are we to have our 6th amendment right to “face our accuser” if no accuser was present at the time of the crime? Please sign this petition so that we can show lawmakers behind this system in New Orleans that we do not deserve these outrageous fines. This petition will help show them that we deserve nothing less than their attention so that a popular vote can be made in favor or against this system.
