Concerning the renovation of the Brussels Air Museums main hall and the preservation of its exhibits.
Since the end of 2006, information has been circulating about the renovation of the aviation hall in the Musée Royal de lArmée de Bruxelles. This building is a remarkable architectural structure situated on an exceptional site.
Its renovation has become a matter of some urgency in order to conserve it and give it back some of its original splendour.
In order to achieve this, the authorities have unfortunately decided to move the whole collection of aircraft and associated pieces (more than 100 exhibits) and to store them for the duration of the renovation (an undisclosed number of years). We believe that in taking care of the container (the aviation hall), the richness of its content is being ignored.
The people behind this message, all active members for many years of a non-profit making association formed for the creation and development of the « Musée de lAir »(Air Museum), have the gravest concerns for the treatment of the collection during its closure to the public. This public is the best guarantee of the survival of the collection.
The state of aircraft previously in good condition which have been removed in the past, shows that the storage conditions and conservation in the reserve facility are deplorable and the entire collection would degrade. We also know that the storage facility hasnt even the minimum level of security. Even worse still, the oldest and rarest aircraft which happen to be the most fragile could not be transported without being severely degraded thus compromising their value both historically and technologically.The museum would thus find itself with a wonderfully renovated building filled with wrecks which it would not have the money nor the means nor the will to restore and look after the machines that it exhibits.
The restoration of these aircraft depends entirely on the finances and the volunteers of the non-profit making associations concerned.
Experience and current information show that the museum has neither the budget, the technical means, the logistics, the human resources, or the skills to carry through such a project successfully.
The renovation project has not yet been officially budgeted but the moving of exhibits has already begun. This leads us to believe that despite the time estimated for the work being four years, the collection would be remote and inaccessible for a much longer time.
We also question the reason for this rush since on the advice of experts, this moving (of the aircraft) is pointless and that extensive work elsewhere of the same type does not necessitate the removal of exhibits or the closure of the building.
Despite official guarantees that no movement of any of the exhibits in the collection would take place before the definition of the global project, to include transparency of information and the obtaining the means to finance it, this is actually happening surreptitiously.
On the other hand the creators of this section of the museum have had the « largesse »of spirit to create a museum that covers all aspects of the history of aviation. In spite of being in a Military museum, one can see civil aircraft, microlights, balloons, machines constructed by amateurs and Belgian military aircraft. This richness recognised by all visitors, will disappear and all that will remain will be historical Belgian military aircraft. Our collection is part of our national heritage. It is recognized and appreciated the world over; we cannot therefore be part of its demise.
All we ask is that details of every aspect of the project be published, that all those involved (including the volunteers) are informed and consulted, that a minimum number of aircraft are moved to enable the renovation to take place and that this section of the museum stays open, even if only partially whilst the work takes place.
It is our future heritage that is in question as well as the credibility of our country and those responsible for the museum.

In verband met de renovatie van de luchtvaarthal en het beschermen van de verzameling
Sinds eind 2006 circuleert er informatie betreffende de renovatie van de luchtvaarthal van het Koninklijk Legermuseum van Brussel. Dit gebouw is een merkwaardige architecturale geheel die zich in een uitzonderlijke site bevindt. Het is inderdaad dringend deze te renoveren om zijn instandhouding te vrijwaren evenals zijn glans terug te geven.
Om dit te bereiken, hebben de autoriteiten besloten om de volledige verzameling van vliegtuigen en objecten die er zich bevinden ,(meer dan 100 stuks), te verhuizen en deze te stockeren gedurende de duur van de werf (meerdere jaren, zonder meer verduidelijking). Onze overtuiging is dat indien men zich om het omvattende, (het gebouw dus), bekommert men niets afweet over het rijkdom van wat het inhoud (de verzameling dus).
De mensen die de oorzaak van deze brief zijn, zijn allemaal jarenlange actieve leden van een VZW die aan de oorsprong van het oprichting van het luchtvaartmuseum ligt. Die vrezen, ten zeerste, het manier hoe de verzameling behandeld zal worden tijdens deze sluiting aan het groot publiek. Dit publiek is de beste waarborg voor wat het voortbestaan van de verzamelingen betreft.
De huidige staat van de vliegtuigen die reeds in goede staat verhuisd werden in het verleden, toont aan dat de opslag omstandigheden in de reserve, rampzalig zijn en dat het geheel van de verzameling beschadigd zal worden. We kunnen aantonen en bewijzen dat de plaats waar de opslagruimte ligt niet aan de minimale veiligheidsvoorwaarden voldoet. Nog erger, de oudste en meest zeldzame vliegtuigen die uiteraard ook de meest breekbare toestellen zijn zullen het transport niet overleven zonder ernstige beschadigigen op te lopen wat schadelijk zou zijn voor de technische en historische waarde. Het museum zal zich omplooien naar een prachtige gerenoveerde gebouw waar alleen wrakken tentoongesteld zullen worden, en dit terwijl dat er nooit de middelen en de wil is geweest om deze toestellen te herstellen en te onderhouden.
De herstelling van deze toestellen hangt volledig af van de financiëen en van de vrijwilligers van de betrokkene VZWs.
De ervaring en de huidige inlichtingen die men heeft tonen aan dat het museum noch het budget , de technische middelen, noch het logistiek, de menselijke krachten en competenties heeft om dit project ten goed einde te brengen.
Het project voor de renovatie maakt niet deel uit een officiele budget maar de verhuis is wel degelijk van start gegaan.Dit laat ons vrezen dat de duur van de werf rond 4 jaar geschat is en dat de verzameling afgezonderd en onbereikbaar voor een langere termijn zal zijn.
Hierbij stellen we ons ook de vraag waarom er zoveel haast is terwijl het advies van experten aangetoond heeft dat deze verhuis nutteloos is als men weet dat andere grotere werven het ontruiming en sluiting bij een gelijkhaardige gebouw niet vereiste.
Terwijl ,dat er enkele weken terug, officiële garanties gegeven werden over het feit dat er geen beweging van verzamelingsstukken ondernomen zouden worden vooraleer het definiëren van een algemeen project waarbij transparente informatie over het verkrijgen van budgetten vrijgegeven zou worden , moeten we spijtig genoeg vastellen dat dit in het strikste geheim verlopen is.
Overigens, de stichters van deze luchtvaartsectie de geestelijke opvatting gehad om een luchtvaartmuseum te stichten die alle historische aspecten uit dit domein omvat. Ondanks het feit dat men in een legermuseum zich bevindt, kan men er burgerluchtvaart, zweefvliegtuigen, ballonen, door amateurs gebouwde vliegtuigen en andere militaire toestellen bewonderen. Deze rijkdom dat begroet wordt door de bezoekers zal verdwijnen en we zullen er maar nog enkele vliegtuigen kunnen terugvinden die maar alleen een directe verband hebben met de Belgische militaire geschiedenis. Onze collectie maakt deel uit ons gemeenschappelijk nationaal patrimonium. Deze is werelwijd erkend en gewaardeerd , daarvoor kunnen wij ons niet aansluiten bij deze vernielers. Men bekommert zich om de verpakking en daardoor wordt onze patrimonium opgeofferd.
Hierbij vragen we dat een gedetailleerde beschrijving van dit project in zijn geheel gepubliceerd wordt , waarbij alle ondernemers (de veldacteurs dus), worden bijbetrokken (vrijwilligers inbegrepen). We vragen en stressen ook op het feit dat een stricte minimum aan vliegtuigen ontruimd wordt om de werken te kunnen verwezenlijken. In dit geval zou de luchtvaartsectie tenminste open kunnen blijven, zelfs gedeeltelijk tijdens de duur van de werf.
Hierbij is sprake van onze Nationaal Patrimonium , de geloofwaardigheid van ons land evenals diegene van de verantwoordelijken van dit museum.

Pour la rénovation du hall de lair et la préservation de ses collections
Depuis la fin de lannée 2006, circule linformation de la rénovation du hall de laviation du Musée Royal de lArmée de Bruxelles. Ce bâtiment est un ensemble architectural remarquable dans un site exceptionnel.
Il est en effet urgent de le rénover pour assurer sa conservation et lui faire retrouver son éclat.
Pour cela, les autorités ont malheureusement décidés de déménager la totalité de la collection daéronefs et objets sy trouvant (plus de 100 pièces) et son stockage durant la durée des travaux (plusieurs années sans précision). Notre conviction est que si on se soucie du contenant, on ignore totalement la richesse du contenu.
Les personnes à lorigine de ce courrier, toutes membres actifs depuis de nombreuses années dune ASBL à lorigine de la création et du développement du « Musée de lAir », émettent les plus grandes craintes quant au traitement réservé à la collection durant sa fermeture au public. Ce public qui est le meilleur garant de la survie des collections.
Létat actuel davions en bon état déjà évacué par le passé, démontre que les conditions de stockage et de conservation dans la réserve sont désastreuses et que lentièreté de la collection se dégradera. Nous pouvons démontrer que lendroit de stockage ne présente pas les conditions minimum de sécurité. Plus grave encore, les avions les plus anciens et les plus rares qui sont aussi les plus fragiles ne supporteront pas un transport sans être fortement dégradés ce qui nuira à leurs valeurs de témoins historiques et techniques. Le musée se retrouvera donc avec un superbe bâtiment rénové exposant des épaves alors quil na jamais eu ni le budget ni les moyens ni la volonté de restaurer et entretenir les appareils quil expose.
La restauration de ceux-ci dépend entièrement des finances et des bénévoles des ASBL concernées.
Lexpérience et les informations actuelles démontrent que le musée na ni le budget, ni les moyens techniques, ni la logistique, ni les moyens humains ni les compétences pour mener à bien ce projet.
Le projet de rénovation ne fait lobjet daucun budget officiel mais le déménagement est déjà en cours. Ceci fait craindre qualors que la durée du chantier est estimée à quatre ans, la collection soit éloignée et inaccessible bien plus longtemps.
On sinterroge aussi sur le pourquoi de cette précipitation alors que de lavis dexperts, ce déménagement est inutile et que dautres grands chantiers nont pas nécessité ni lévacuation ni la fermeture de bâtiments du même type.
Alors que des garanties officielles avaient été données voici quelques semaines quaucun mouvements de pièces de collection ne seraient entrepris avant définition din projet global, information transparente et obtention des moyens et des budgets, force est de constater le contraire et ceci en catimini.
Par ailleurs, les créateurs de cette section du musée ont eu la largesse desprit de créer un musée de laviation couvrant tous les aspects de lhistoire de celle-ci. Malgré que lon soit au musée de lArmée, on y voit des avions civils, des planeurs, des ULM, des ballons, des appareils de constructeurs amateurs et des appareils militaires autres que belges. Cette richesse saluée par les visiteurs, va disparaître et on ny retrouvera plus que des appareils en rapports directs avec lhistoire militaire belge. Notre collection fait partie de notre patrimoine national commun. Elle est connue et appréciée du monde entier ; nous ne pouvons nous associer à ses fossoyeurs. On se soucie de lemballage, on sacrifie notre patrimoine à tous.
Nous demandons donc que soit publié le détail de ce projet dans sa globalité et dans tout ces détails, que tous les acteurs de terrain soient associés (y compris les bénévoles), quun minimum davions soient déménagés pour pouvoir exécuter les travaux et que cette section du musée reste ouverte, même partiellement durant les travaux.
Cest de lavenir de notre patrimoine quil est question ainsi que de la crédibilité de notre pays et des responsables de ce musée.
